What is baking soda?
Baking soda - also known as sodium bicarbonate - is a leavening agent that is normally used to help baked goods rise - think pancakes, cookies, muffins, and more. If you don't have some in your kitchen cupboards, we'll be surprised!
You can pick up baking soda, or bicarbonate of soda, from your local supermarket. It's really inexpensive, and it makes a great natural cleaning product.
Clean your bathroom with baking soda
From the shower head to the toilet bowl, follow the tips below to get your bathroom sparkling with baking soda.
1. Replace your cream cleaner with bicarbonate of soda
Use a sprinkle of bicarbonate of soda on a sponge to clean any surface you would usually use a cream cleaner on. It'll work just as well to remove dirt and grime. It won't leave you with that harsh chemical smell either. Finish with a micro fibre cloth for an immaculate finish.
2. Use baking soda to clean your hairbrushes and combs
Your hair tools can get extremely gunky over time. Make sure they last a long time and remain in tip-top condition by giving them a good clean every few months.
Soak them in a mixture of 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 2 cups of warm water for an hour then rinse and dry.
3. Toothbrushes are not self-cleaning!
Don’t pass on bad bacteria to your mouth - soak your toothbrush heads in a mixture of ¼ cup bicarbonate of soda and a ¼ cup of water overnight and rinse the next morning.
4. Use baking soda to make your own bathroom scrub
Mix a ¼ cup of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of liquid detergent and add some vinegar to give it a nice thick consistency. Use a sponge with a large dollop of this home-made cleaner on all your bathroom fittings and you’ll never need to buy bathroom cleaners again.
5. Whiten your grout
Baking soda is great for whitening teeth, so why not use it to whiten your grout? Clean grout is hard to maintain, but this trick will certainly help.
To make your own grout cleaner:
- Mix together two parts baking soda and one part hydrogen peroxide.
- Use a cloth or an old toothbrush to apply the mixture to the grout.
- Optional step: You can also place cotton wool pads on the tile to hold the mixture in place for longer.
- Leave to sit for between 10-20 minutes.
- Rinse the mixture away with clean water.
Cleaning with baking soda in the kitchen
Ideally, you want to avoid using chemical-based cleaners in a place where you prepare food. They can be highly toxic, and natural cleaners do the job just as well. We've found some easy switches that you can make with baking soda.
5. De-grease your oven door
Cleaning with baking soda has never been more effective than in the kitchen.
Cleaning the oven is a job we all hate to do but it needn't be a chore with bicarbonate of soda. This tried and tested method will leave your glass oven door sparkling:
- Mix 3 parts bicarbonate of soda to 1 part warm water to form a paste.
- Warm the oven for a few minutes and then switch it off.
- Wipe the glass with a damp cloth.
- Spread the paste on both sides of the oven door.
- Leave for 2-3 hours until the paste turns brown.
- Wipe both sides with a damp sponge cloth.
- Use a plastic car scraper to remove any excess.
6. Unblock your kitchen sink
Pour half a cup of baking soda down your sink followed by two cups of vinegar (malt is fine) and watch as the alkaline in the bicarb reacts with the acidic vinegar to create a volcano of froth. Leave to settle and it should help dissolve any built-up grime.
If your sink needs extra help, mix 1 cup of bicarbonate of soda with 2 cups of washing powder (great for de-greasing) then follow with vinegar. Finish with a kettle-full of boiling water.
7. Remove tea stains from mugs
The crystals in baking soda can effectively remove stains in your mugs and help return them to their former glory. Just be prepared to put some elbow grease into it!
Sprinkle some bicarb on a clean scourer and get scrubbing. It should take around 5-10 minutes to lift stains and reveal a good-as-new mug.
8. Freshen up smelly sponges
If your sponges are getting a bit smelly don't be tempted to bin them.
Baking soda works wonders at absorbing smells - soak sponges in a bowl full of warm water with 4 tablespoons of dissolved baking soda. Let them air dry and they should smell like new.
9. Keep your fridge fresh
Smelly fridge? Keep it smelling clean with baking soda!
Bad smells aren't just off-putting when you're looking for a midnight snack, they can actually ruin the taste of surrounding food.
Keep a small bowl of bicarb in your fridge to help neutralise smells. It works like a sponge to soak up any bad odours - just remember to change it every month or so.
10. Remove stains from your Tupperware
Whether it was a leftover curry or spaghetti bolognese that did the damage, you can easily revive your old Tupperware or plastic food containers. If yours are stained, greasy or smelly, soak them overnight in a bowl of hot water with a sprinkling of baking soda to leave them spotless.
11. Use baking soda to clean your dishwasher
Scatter a generous amount of baking soda into your dishwasher then run an empty wash. It'll be clean and fresh again in no time.
12. Remove baked-on residue from pans
Even pan cleaning is easier with baking soda! Shake a generous amount onto any dirty pans or roasting tins, add hot water, a squirt of your usual cleaning liquid, and let sit for 20 minutes. The baking soda will help dissolve any stubborn build-up making it really easy to clean.
13. Clean the microwave inside and out
Has your microwave been neglected?
A small amount of bicarbonate of soda on a damp sponge can effectively clean and cut through any grease in and on your microwave. If you've got a lemon and some vinegar to hand, you can give your microwave a deep clean.
14. Descale a kettle
Limescale is no match for bicarb! You can clean your kettle with it, too. Watch our video to see how it's done.
Spruce up your living room with bicarbonate of soda
You can clean everything from the carpets to the windows with bicarbonate of soda. Keep reading to find out how!
14. Clean dirty rugs and carpets
Dirty carpet? Baking soda can be used for carpet cleaning. Liberally sprinkle baking soda on your carpet, wait at least 15 minutes then sweep as much of it as you can and vacuum as normal.
For the best results, leave the powder to settle overnight. Your carpet or rug should look brighter and smell good - a nice way to refresh your carpet naturally. Just think how much you could save instead of splashing out on expensive carpet treatments.
15. Shine silver ornaments and fittings
Combine three parts baking soda to one part water, mix and rub onto and into your silver with a clean cloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly then dry with a clean cloth – they’ll be sparkling!
16. Make your own version of Febreze
Get your fabrics smelling amazing with this clever hack:
- Fill an empty spray bottle with 3/4 hot water.
- Add 4 tablespoons of Bicarbonate of Soda.
- Shake well and allow to cool a little.
- Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil.
- Once cooled completely, give it another shake to combine the ingredients, and then spray on clothes and soft furnishings.
17. Remove smells from a sofa
Over time your sofa may become a bit whiffy. Sprinkle some baking soda onto a dry sofa and let it sit for 10-20 minutes before hoovering or brushing off.
Use bicarb to clean your clothes
From dull whites to dull jewellery, baking soda will refresh and restore your whole wardrobe!
18. How to brighten whites with baking soda
Are your whites looking a bit dull? Try cleaning with baking soda! It's one of our favourite laundry detergent alternatives.
Add 1 cup of baking soda to your next load of laundry along with regular liquid detergent. They’ll emerge much cleaner and brighter than before!
Use this little trick to whiten up the kids' school shirts and polos. It's a great bra-whitening tip, too!
We also love using baking soda to remove hair dye stains. Find out how in our other article.
19. How to clean jewellery with bicarbonate of soda
Make a paste using three parts bicarb and one part warm water until it resembles fondant icing. Then, using a cloth or old toothbrush, apply it to your jewellery. Rinse carefully and dry with a clean cloth.
As we said, baking soda is a great degreaser. Did you know you can also use it to get butter out of clothes?
Q&A
Where can I buy baking soda?
Most supermarkets will sell baking soda or bicarbonate of soda in the baking section. It can come in different packaging, including tubs or boxes.
Are there any other uses for baking soda?
Yes! Baking soda also has a whole range of health and beauty benefits.
Is baking powder the same thing as baking soda?
Baking soda and baking powder might sound like the same thing, especially given that baking soda can also go by bicarbonate of soda, but they're very different.
Baking powder is baking soda but with an additional acidic ingredient. Because of the additional acidity, baking powder is not suitable for use in any of these beauty treatments.
Is washing soda the same as baking soda?
Although the two are very similar, they are not to be confused for the same product. Washing soda is sodium carbonate with additional cleaning ingredients.
You can make your own washing soda by heating baking soda. Simply spread onto a shallow baking dish and heat at around 200 C. Once cool, you can keep it in an airtight container.

Forgot to mention the only reason to date I have a constant supply in the cupboard is a self clean ! Its the ideal remedy for cystitis - 1 teaspoon to a luke warm small glass of water & hey presto its a fix
Interesting tip T, I didn't know that!
That's really good to know my daughter suffers with cystitis ,paid loads money in past for over the counter sales. Thank you
You're welcome Martha.
It's amazing for cystitis I suffered terribly now one teaspoon In water and clears up within the hour
Hi ladies im a bit dumb but dont understand do you use this mixture for washing that area to clear cystitis or drink it (yuk lol ) but if it works im sure the taste can be covered up with a squeese of lemon ? sorry for stupid question xx shaz
Yes drink it
If your sponge has a bad odour it means bacteria build up . Does bicarb actually kill the bacteria or just mask the smell ? Best to chuck it or maybe bleach it ?
Hi there, Bicarbonate of Soda is really good at masking smells but it can also help get rid of mild bacterias. If a sponge has a particularly bad smell I would just chuck it out though. Better to be safe than sorry.
To clean a sponge I would soak it in vinegar, and then microwave it for a minute. The should kill the bacteria, plus it loosens any grime inside the microwave for easier cleaning.
Interesting tip William thanks for sharing. Vinegar is a great household item...have you read our article on the 21 uses for vinegar? https://experthometips.com/be-amazed-21-surprising-uses-for-vinegar
clean your teeth with bicarb on your toothbrush, leaves your teeth sqeaky clean and using regular whitens them, much better than any expensive toothpastes and it works. from lynn
I do this too Lynn. More as a once weekly stain removing treatment.
I wouldn't use on your teeth regularly, I did it every day for 3yr when I was 13 till 16, it took all the enamel off them and weakened them so bad I now have really bad trouble with them and I'm only 30 x
Oh no I'm sorry to hear that. Agreed, it should only be used as a treatment and not every day.
Yes be very careful with your teeth as using bicarbonate soda on them will damage them! I use to use it weekly on my teeth and kept getting really bad mouth abscess. It do weaken the enamel and can do more harm than good. Better be safe than sorry peeps! Love the different uses for bicarbonate soda tho.
Awesome ideas! I'm going to try them on my house .thanks for sharing the information.
You can use baking powder , to get rid of cup/mug rings on coffee tables etc. Sprinkle on ,and rub in ,then rinse off

Hi Colette, great stuff! I use a small amount of bicarbonate of soda once a week to lightly whiten any stains, too.
How do you do this? Add bicarb to your toothpaste? Thanks for the article, some great ideas here and best of all it will save us money on all sorts of cleaning products!
You can make a little paste with water and use it as a weekly treatment if you like.
I was using bicarbonate of soda one a week mixed with toothpaste to remove stains but my dentist said don't use it as it strips the enamel from teeth so please don't recommend it for cleaning teeth. It is good for household cleaning.
Hi Denise. Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences with us and the professional advice from your doctor. Could I please ask where you've found us recommending it for teeth whitening so I can take a look? Thanks

Hi Tricia, apply the bicarbonate of soda do you mean?
Thank you for the useful bicarbonate of soda cleaning tip as I'm asthmatic and have to be careful with what I am using when cleaning the kitchen sides n bathroom. I was wondering if anyone knows if bicarbonate of soda is any good for refreshing carpets and rooms as I am finding it hard to find airfresheners and carpet refreshing products that are safe for me to use as well as being into carpets with a hard bristled brush
Hi Toni-Jane, thanks for the comment. Really happy to hear you've found the tips useful. You can indeed use bicarbonate of soda on carpets to freshen and mask smells. This is a useful article http://www.wikihow.com/Deodorize-Carpet-With-Baking-Soda

Great to hear Ellen.
Some more tips here http://www.dri-pak.co.uk/cleaning-products/bicarbonate-of-soda/ . Some of your tips, particularly those involving grease removal would be better dealt with by Soda Crystals. Very similar to bicarb but more alkali.
After reading the uses for bicarbonate I'm going to try some of them today . I never knew there were so many things to do with it. Thank you
Fantastic. Let me know how you get on Sian.
Brilliant
When I have used my Thermos Flask I give it a rinse out and let it dry upside down. Before putting the lid on it I put a teaspoon of Bicarb in. When I want to use it next I just give it a rinse and use! You don't get that stale old tea smell.
Nice tip Debbie. Those flasks do start to smell a bit. Good to give it a refresh!

Seems a good. Website
Hope you enjoy the articles Irene!
I sprinkle it in my boots last thing at night to take away the odour, works a treat.
Ooh that's a good one. Soaks it all up like a sponge!
You mention cystitis. Can bicarbonate of soda also be used as a medicinal item for other ailments?
Hi Ludwina, most over the counter antacids such as Alka Seltzer contain some bicarbonate of soda in them so for occasional heartburn or indigestion you could try a home remedy: half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in half a cup of water. You should only use it as a short-term alternative, there are a few beliefs that it has other medicinal purposes but I would not want to advise on them as I'm not a professional. You should always seek medical advice before trying anything alternative :)
I mix it to a paste with water to clean my worktops. it takes some elbow grease, but is great and safe for removing stains, also great for cleaning my enamel lined cast iron casserole pan. i have used it to clean mugs and soak my toothbrush, besides for baking purposes. Any ideas where i can get a extra large tub please? And your tips are great, thanks.
Thank you Sarah! I love making a paste too, it works really well at deep-cleaning mugs I agree. Amazon have the best prices for bags over 2.5kg - have a quick browse!
Sprinkle some powder over your mattress, leave for an hour. Then hoover it off to refresh your bed
Nice tip! I do this too.
Baking Soda will be on my next shopping list!
Excellent! Let me know how you get on.
I always have bicarbonate of soda in my cupboard, it is great if you have heartburn, quarter of teaspoon in half cup of warm water, it really helps. I also use it in my grandsons trainers, just sprinkle into trainer and leave overnight and then empty out, no more smelly trainers.
That's an interesting one Valerie, I will have a little read on the effects of bicarb for heartburn. Thanks!
Been using this for ages to do all different types of cleaning. Salt is a good alternative with either some vinegar or lemon juice added! Another good tip Use denture cleaning tablets to keep your toilet bowl clean! Cheaper and better for the environment!
I have heard that one Marian with the denture tablets! Thanks for the tips, will try salt as an alternative.
Hi I have a fairly new ceramic pan. Corners slightly turned brown, used baking soda and hot water to clean, but nothing has changed. It looks dull. Any advise? Thank you
Hi there did you try soaking it in very hot water for 30 minutes?

Haha have fun!
Hi. Would anyone know if Is bicarbonate of soda - safe to use around pets, in particular cats. Thanks. b
Hi Brenda, as far as I know it's safe in small doses. They shouldn't ingest large amounts but its safe to use as a cleaning product - http://pets.thenest.com/can-baking-soda-hurt-cats-10555.html
Excellent tips especially for the dreaded cooker - thank you
You're welcome Lois. Nobody enjoys cooker cleaning...
I love to use bicarb to clean all sorts of things - inside my washing machine door it's a must, much better than those expensive machine cleaners that require running a hot cycle too! BUT, you advocate buffing with a microfiber cloth. Please don't!! All those tiny, tiny fibres in the wash, in the bath etc. going down the plughole - they are so fine that they go THROUGH the filters at waste treatment and end up going out to sea. Fish ingest them, and they're so fine that they are DIGESTED and end up in the tissues - then we EAT them!!
Hi Christine, that's very interesting thanks for sharing and warning everyone of this! I will do some reading on it and amend the article.
Some really good advice there. Thank you!
You're welcome Sandra.
Great!
Always put a few pinches in my batter, LOVERLY x

Hi Karla :) I've never tried this but it's certainly an interesting one - miracle if it works!
Dab some bicarb on mouth ulcers. It will sting for a second but ulcer will be clear in no time. X
Hi Karin. This is an interesting tip & one we've not heard before. Thanks for sharing your wisdom! :)
Use it dissolved in warm water to create a sparkle when washing your Windows and no Smear's.
Hi Brian. That's an interesting idea. Normally we just use vinegar & newspaper. Thanks for sharing! :)
I always use bicarb soda in with my washing up, and in the washing machine. I've also used it, with vinegar, to unblock the drains. There are hundreds of uses for bicarb soda n for acv, both for cleaning the whole household
Hi :) There certainly are loads of uses for bicarbonate of soda - no wonder it's our favourite natural cleaning product.
Hi, I use bicarb as a carpet freshener. I have a flour shaker and fill it with the soda, I dry some lemon or lime peel and add it to the shaker. It is great for lifting pet smells on carpets and rugs. Leave for 20 mins or so and vacuum. It doesn't harm my dog and is a natural product.
Hi Jill. This is a wonderful idea and one we use a lot. We've never tried adding the citrus peels however - will definitely be giving it a go. Thanks for sharing :)
Love that idea of using a salt shaker, Def have to buy one as it will be easier than just pouring it by hand, also using grated lemon peel
Hi there. Salt shakers come in handy for loads of things, and you can upcycle them time and time again. Definitely worth investing! Glad you like the tips :)
Just like my nana. She used this for bringing up the shine on her beer glasses. Nan and grandad had a pub. Also pour some in smelly shoes. Odour vanishes.
Hi Amanda. Wow, I bet they had the sparkliest glasses around! It's amazing how bicarb has helped so many people over the years :)
I've just come across expert home tips I really love this amazing tips
Thanks for the kind feedback, Pauline!
trapped wind ???...1/2 tsp of bicarb in a small amount of water..stir swallow wind goes xx
Great tip, Sarah!
Thank you everyone for tips on cleaning teeth with bicarb.
All good. Although bicarbonate + acid produces carbon-dioxide + water. If we all started using bicarb in large amounts, what would the impact be on climate?
It would have less of an environmental impact than using most commercial cleaning products.
I want to use bicarbonate soda on my shower head, I’m not sure of how much to use and do I put the shower head in a bowl ? And how long do I leave it for - your hints will really help me , thank you
Hi Janet! If you don't want to take your shower head down, you can submerge it using a sandwich bag. Fill the bag with white vinegar and securely tie it around the shower head. Leave it to soak overnight and then rinse with water in the morning. You can also use baking soda mixed with a little water to make a paste. Use an old toothbrush and scrub the shower head with the mixture.
Hi can I clean my sofas with bicarbonate of soda???xxx
Hi Alison! You certainly can. We have written an article all about it here > https://experthometips.com/best-way-to-clean-upholstery-sofa-baking-soda
Fantastic, can't wait to try a golden egg ?, thank you
I use bicarbonate of soda to wash my hair! Shampoo gives me scalp issues so I mix bicarbonate of soda with warm water, pour it over my hair, rub into scalp and hair as I would shampoo and wait for about 10 minutes. Rinse well and add a small amount of cider vinegar to rinse water as a conditioner. Clean, soft, strong, manageable hair and no itchy scalp. I've done this for at least 5 years.
We'll have to give this a try, Terri! We have given apple cider vinegar a go, and loved the results!
I wash my hair with bicarbonate of soda paste, rinse, then as a conditioner the apple cider vinegar. Hair has never been better, have done this now for over a year.
Using a bicarbonate of soda paste and apple cider vinegar as a conditioner can be effective for some people as a natural alternative to traditional hair care products. As long as they are used in moderation and working well for you, there is no reason why you shouldn't continue to use them as part of your hair care routine.
This is an excellent article! Thank you for sharing :)
Thanks for the feedback!
Soda is good for cleaning stains on pots from vegetables like beet, potaoes with skin, dark beans, black currants or chokeberries. Coffee/tea stains take no elbow work and come right off. They say you shouldn't, but I scrub aluminum pots. That takes elbow grease to work into the cracks and pits. I think soaking without scrubbing (brushes, tender plastic) takes a stronger soda to be effective. Baking soda is so weak that it needs boiling. Try washing crystals or caustic soda: brown stains turn red and dissolve in water by themselves in minutes.
I've been told that baking soda sprinkled on mattresses for an hour or so substantially reduces dust mites. Have you heard this? Tony
I hadn't heard this, but it sounds interesting!
Milk was spilt on my laminate flooring now it stinks will it get rid of the smell and how to apply ....thanks
To remove the smell of spilt milk on laminate flooring, clean up the spill immediately and use a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar to clean the affected area thoroughly. If the smell persists, sprinkle baking soda over the area and vacuum it up after a few hours, or use a commercial cleaner specifically designed for laminate flooring.
How to use it to clean teeth and it become white.
Mix 1 tsp baking soda with water to form a paste, then brush your teeth with it for 2 minutes before rinsing with water and brushing with regular toothpaste. However, excessive use of baking soda can potentially damage the enamel of your teeth, so it's best to use it in moderation.
Talking about bicarbonated soda years ago my mother in law used to take it regularly for indigestion, but years later she had a perforated ulcer, do no tknow if the bicarb was a contributing factor but it may be, so caution or as they say everything in moderation. I also had an aunt who used toclean her teeth after every meal, but had to stop because she had cleaned all the enamel of her her teeth, it just makes you wonder sometimes, so take care with whatever you do, If you are not sure about what things do or do not do, whichever case try starting small.
Natural remedies and everyday habits can have unintended consequences or side effects, so it's essential to consult a healthcare professional and start small when making changes to your routine. This can help you gauge their impact on your body and adjust accordingly.
CAN I USE BAKING SODA TO CLEAN INSIDE AN ABOVE GROUND SWIMMING POOL
Yes, Baking soda can be used to raise the pH level of the water if it is too low, and it can also be used to scrub away stains on the pool's walls and floor. However, using the right amount of baking soda is essential, as using too much can make the water cloudy and raise the pH level too much. Make sure you test the water level after adding the baking soda and adjust accordingly.
I notice our car starting having a stale smell I had tried several things but nothing helped so I decided to pick up more baking soda the kind with opining on each side and put it in the car .It worked great I change it out about every 30 days .I also sprinkle some in the carpet in the car let it sit a bit before a vacuum the vehicle that helps too .I know we can do these things in the home why not the vehicle .Maybe some others could use these idea .
Great idea!
Can u clean really dirty tiled floors with this plz
You could certainly give it a try!
Does it help getting rid of cat pee smell please?
Yes, it's excellent for deodorising smells! Make sure the surface is dry before you apply it.
I use bicarb for cleaning paint brushes after using water based paint. After rinsing the beush, soak it in warm water with a teaspoon or two of bicarb and then rinse. It's quicker than cleaning the brush with detergent which makes lots of froth and does a better job.
That's a great suggestion! It's essential to rinse the brush thoroughly after soaking to remove all traces of baking soda, as it can affect the brush's performance and lifespan.
