How To Make Your Hair Grow Faster Than EVER - 1 Inch In A Week!

How To Make Your Hair Grow Faster Than EVER - 1 Inch In A Week!

Some people are vertically challenged, others are follically changed. If you're looking for ways to make your hair grow faster, you're in the right place!

Our rate of hair growth is influenced by a combination of things, including genetics, over-styling and a low iron count, and encouraging it can be tricky business.

Over the years we've experimented with loads of different hair products and home remedies in an attempt to get long locks, and after a lot of reading and heaps of testing, we've finally found a formula that really works.

We know it's hard to believe, but this article really can teach you how to grow your hair in one day, and up to one inch a week! It's time to get the hair you've always dreamed of...

Editor's Note: This post was originally posted in August 2015 and has been completely revamped and updated for accuracy and comprehensiveness in September 2018.

How fast does hair grow?

This is how much hair should grow...

Before you start learning how to make hair grow faster, it's helpful to first figure out how quickly it naturally grows so we can understand what to expect.

According to the U.S Center for Disease Control, hair grows at an average of 0.50 inches (1.25cm) per month. This means the average person can expect to grow 6 inches of hair per year.

The speed at which your hair grows depends on both genetics and the shape of your follicles - Asian hair is on average the thickest and most coarse hair compared to Caucasian and African hair.

Hair grows at 0.50 inches on average per month which sounds like a lot, right? So why does it never feel like it? Well, things like over-styling,

bad diet and not taking good care of your hair can result in split ends and breakages which shorten the length of your hair.

This leads us to another important question...

How does hair grow?

long red hair
Gorgeous locks!

Hairs grow from follicles on the scalp. Depending on your genetic makeup, your scalp can have between 90,000 and 150,000 follicles.

Follicles are a mammalian skin organ and along with stem cells, they produce and help to grow hair. Your hair begins to grow from the root of the follicle which is made up of cells of protein.

Blood from the blood vessels in your scalps feeds the root which creates more cells and makes hair grow. In this article, you will find tips to both increase production of protein cells and blood flow, resulting in faster hair growth.

The production of hair occurs in three different phases:

Anagen (The growth phase): The Anagen phase is the time during which the hair is actually growing - The longer it can stay in this phase, the better. the length of Anagen usually depends on genetics and can last anywhere from two to seven years.

Catagen (The transitional phase): Once Anagen has ended, the hair follicle will shrink, the papilla detach and the hair will no longer be attached to supply of nutrients. This normally lasts around 10 days.

Telogen (The resting phase): The final stage in hair growth isn't about growth at all - during Telogen, the hair is released and falls out. The follicle then 'rests' for around 3 months before the cycle is repeated.

The phases run simultaneously so some hairs on your head will be in the Anagen phase and others in Telogen.  For each hair strand, the Anagen phase should start again once the Telogen phase is complete, but some people may experience longer Telogen phases meaning hair is shedding but no new hair is growing.

This may result in thinning of the hair. In this case, the goal is to, effectively,  'jump-start' the Anagen phase and encourage the growth phase to begin.

While genetics or other growth inhibitors like Chemotherapy or Alopecia may prevent you from being able to 'jump-start' the process, most people are able to achieve it with the following steps.

What stunts hair growth?

Hair doesn't just decide to stop growing - there are lots of things that can stunt hair growth. Try avoiding the following:

1. Overstyling

We all want gorgeous-looking hair, but it should never be at the expense of hair health.

If you're using heat tools every day - whether that be hot irons or the hair-dryer - try to cut down. Heat can weaken your hair so even just alternating or going an extra day without heat can dramatically improve the condition of your hair.

If you must use heat, try to gently towel and air dry your hair until it's around 60% dry then use the hairdryer on a medium setting.

TOP TIP: invest in a high-quality hair protection spray - they really do help to keep your hair healthy.

2. Poor diet

As with most things health and beauty, diet plays a  massive role in not only the condition but your rate of hair growth.

A diet deficient in vitamins, minerals and protein will make it harder than ever to grow your hair fast.

3. Wrong products

When it comes to hair products, sometimes less is more. Whilst some creams really can benefit hair health and help make it grow, others cause more damage than good.

Don't just use anything on your hair - harsh chemicals will dry it out and may stunt hair growth.

4. Tight hairstyles

Tight ponytails and high buns might look nice, but they can cause serious damage to our hair health.

Bobbles grip the hair, causing friction which may lead to fraying and split ends - we've all pulled one out before to find it covered in our precious hair. Tying your hair up every once in a while is no big deal, but having the same updo every day will cause damage over time.

Braids are another thing to do sparingly if you want to preserve your hair health - if done too tightly, they can physically pull the hair away from the roots and cause splitting, hair weakness and follicle damage.

When it comes to wet hair, putting it up should be avoided at all costs. Wet hair is more prone to splitting than dry, the evidence of which will be on your hair bobble should you ever try it.

5. Hormonal imbalance

Everything from thyroid-related disorders to stress, menstruation and puberty can cause a change in hormones that impact our hair.

Estrogen and progesterone are specific hormones that promote hair growth, whilst androgen and testosterone discourage it. When these hormones become imbalanced, it forces the hair into the telogen phase, causing hair loss and thinning.

How to make hair grow faster

1. Eat protein & Biotin-rich foods

Egg On Table
Fried, poached or scambled...have an egg or two a day.

Biotin, also known as Vitamin H, forms a part of the B-complex group of vitamins that help turn food into fuel for energy. It also assists in the metabolism of fats, carbs and amino acids which are the building blocks of protein.

As we discussed earlier, hair begins to grow from the root of the follicle which is made up of cells of protein. For faster hair growth, you need to eat a diet rich in both Biotin and protein in order to facilitate the building blocks of protein.

The daily recommended allowance of Biotin is 30 micrograms, which you can ensure you're achieving by taking in a supplement form. If you prefer, you can eat foods that are naturally high in Biotin. This has many many other body-boosting benefits too, such as stronger nails and eyelashes.

Here's a list of Biotin and protein-rich foods which will encourage hair growth:

  • Almonds, Peanuts, Pecans and Walnuts
  • Eggs (the yolk has one of the highest concentrations of Biotin)
  • Milk and Cheese
  • Pork and Cooked Liver
  • Salmon and Sardines
  • Avocado
  • CauliflowerAlmonds are you new go-to snack.

2. The ‘Inversion Method’ for hair growth

the inversion method wire head massager

If you take just one thing from this article, make it The Inversion Method - yes, we capitalised it because it's that important!

The Inversion Method claims to achieve one inch of hair growth a week, and whilst it might not work for everyone it's definitely worth a try.

Method:

  1. Get your hair trimmed to remove and split ends which may affect results.
  2. Measure your hair so you can compare it to the end results.
  3. Sit on a chair, sofa or the end of your bed, and hang your head between your legs. Remember: 'Inversion' is when your heart is positioned higher than your head. Inversion poses and twists are commonly found in yoga practices and are safe to perform, but if you feel dizzy or light-headed stop immediately.
  4. Use your fingertips to massage your scalp for 5-10 minutes. Make sure you use a timer so you are continuously massaging.
  5. You can help boost the method and give your hair an intensive moisturising treatment using a natural oil like Coconut Oil, Olive Oil or Argan Oil whilst massaging. If you can, leave it in overnight in a shower cap. More on these oils later. You don’t have to use the oil, but it will help condition so your hair will feel stronger and shinier than ever.
  6. Repeat every day for seven consequetive days, then leave for a month before repeating.

If you're serious about hair growth, a wire scalp massager is a great tool to invest in. They're cheap, comfortable and will prevent your fingers and hands from becoming tired.

3. Rinse hair with cold water

blonde plaited ponytail

Not many people know, but hot water strips the hair of moisture and weakens hair strands making it more perceptible to breakage. To prevent damage, make sure you're washing your hair with lukewarm water, and definitely not hot or scorching.

Warm water will cause follicles to open, enabling you to clean the scalp thoroughly. It's important, however, to finish off with a blast of cold water to close them again to reduce hair loss and frizz.

This one step alone can make a huge difference to your hair, helping it to grow faster and fall less.

4. Try grass-fed gelatin

how to make hair grow faster
There's more to gelatin than jelly! ©WikiCommons

Gelatin is more than an ingredient in jelly - it's derived from animal parts and extremely high in protein and other nutrients too.

It can help to nourish your entire body, but is especially beneficial to your hair, skin and nails. This is because gelatin increases the production of collagen in the skin - an amino acid that enhances the appearance of pretty much every body part.

Although many beauty products claim to encourage collagen production, it's important to boost collagen from the inside as well as the outside, especially as we age and production decreases.

You can get your gelatin fix from common foods like low-calorie jelly, but for an even bigger boost try Grass-fed gelatin. It comes from cows that graze on grass instead of grain. Healthier cows boast higher gelatin prowess according to the suppliers.

You can buy grass-fed gelatin as a supplement that can be added to hot and room temperature drinks. Great Lakes have an affordable range and can be bought from Amazon. Simply add a teaspoon to your morning tea or coffee.

Check out Butter Believer's Guide to Gelatin Powder for more information on all things gelatin.

5. Lee Stafford Hair Growth Treatment

If you enjoy experimenting with hair products, we have a recommendation you can really rely on. Lee Stafford's Hair Growth range includes a Hair Treatment, Shampoo, Conditioner and Leave-In Conditioner.

All of the products contain a unique 'Pro-Growth' Complex which is high in protein. It helps to fertilise your hair follicles and encourage new growth as well as anchoring your existing hair to your scalp.

New hair growth and less hair loss = win, win.

Available at Boots.
Available at Boots.

You don't need to use all the products, but we highly recommend the leave-in conditioner and the treatment. The treatment can be used every time you massage your hair during the Inversion Method instead of a natural oil.

Some blogs may recommend natural products and the 'no-poo' method, which involves cutting out all haircare and relying on baking soda to clean your hair. Whilst we're a big fan of baking soda, we love using coconut oil and olive oil as both beauty and hair care products, and have also found the Lee Stafford range to really work.

6. Cut out the heat and let your hair loose

There's no escaping the fact that heat damages our hair. Just because we can't feel the heat, it doesn't mean it won't affect our hair - after all, you're essentially ironing it.

If you want to encourage your hair to grow faster, the best thing to do is leave it au natural. This means leaving it to air dry, avoiding styling, and leaving it loose or tying it in low hairstyles.

7. Get your vitamins & minerals

Diet is just as important for us on the outside as it is on the inside. Besides protein and Biotin-rich foods, it's also important to get as many vitamins and minerals as possible.

  • Spinach is a particularly important vegetable for hair growth, as it's high in protein and Vitamins A and C which your body needs to produce sebum which moisturises your scalp. A deficiency in these vitamins can result in brittle hair or even hair loss so make sure you are eating plenty of spinach in your diet.
  • Broccoli is another of the best greens you can eat for hair health. As well as Vitamin A and C it also contains essential B vitamins that are needed for strong hair. The antioxidants in broccoli, particularly vitamin C also prevent hair loss by eliminating the free radicals,  contributing to healthier and thicker hair.

Both are reasonably priced so make sure you eat at least one portion of either once a day and you'll start to notice not only a healthier bowel, but your skin hair and nails should look better than ever too.

Natural home remedies for hair growth

Besides your diet and using specific hair products, there are also several home remedies for hair growth that can have a huge impact on hair health and encourage it to get long and strong.

1. Coconut Oil

We briefly touched on coconut oil in the Inversion Method section, and now it's time to look at this fabulous natural product in more detail.

Comprised mainly of smaller medium-chain fatty acids, coconut oil penetrates the hair more deeply and quickly than most other conditioners, and because it's 100% natural you can use it as much as you like without any damage.

There are numerous benefits of using Coconut Oil on your hair including:

  • Stimulates hair growth by penetrating deep into the follicles.
  • Provides amazing moisturisation for dry hair.
  • Adds shine to hair.
  • Reduces protein loss in your hair - the only oil to do this.
  • Contains anti-bacterial properties to soothe an itchy or flaky scalp.

TRY IT: Use Coconut Oil while doing the Inversion Method or as a once a week overnight treatment to help your hair grow faster than ever.

A tub will last you a good few months, so we'd definitely recommend picking one up next time you're out. For best results, opt for one that's raw, organic and unrefined.

If you don't have any coconut oil to hand, you can also use olive oil to nourish your dry and damaged locks.

2. Vaseline

A pot of vaseline is something everyone should have in their bathroom cupboard - not only is it great for treating dry skin and lips, but it can also benefit hair.

Remember, once hair has gone through the Anagen stage, it no longer has a supply of nutrients. This means it's even more important to provide it with extra nourishment.

TRY IT: You can apply Vaseline directly onto the ends of hair to keep them well moisturised and prevent splitting, or, for a more intense treatment, apply to the scalp, massage in and leave overnight whilst wearing a shower cap.

3. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has both cooling and soothing properties that can be used for a variety of home remedies. As far as our hair's concerned, aloe vera can strengthen and repair, promote hair growth, deep clean and calm an itchy scalp, all of which will improve hair health and increase your chances of growing gorgeous locks.

TRY IT: Apply aloe vera to the scalp and massage through hair. Leave for an hour before washing as normal.

4. How to grow long hair with castor oil

Castor oil is another budget beauty product that can benefit our hair. Its antifungal and antibacterial properties are particularly helpful for the scalp, whilst the vitamins, minerals, proteins and fatty acids help hair to grow.

TRY IT: Apply castor oil to damp (not wet) hair and leave for several hours, or, ideally, overnight.

5. Eggs

We all know eggs are good for our bodies, but did you know our hair and skin like them too?

Eggs are packed with a lot of nutrients, including biotin, vitamin A, D and folate - many of the same nutrients you'll find in healthy, glossy hair. An egg hair treatment can both encourage hair growth and prevent damage - a dream team of sorts!

TRY IT: Whisk 2 egg yolks with 2 tbsp olive oil and apply the mixture to damp hair, using more on the tips than the roots. Leave to sit for 20 minutes in a shower cap, then shampoo with cold water.

6. Super fast hair growth with apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can complement your existing hair care routine in many ways. It contains potassium, has antifungal and antibacterial qualities and a similar pH to that of hair meaning it promotes a healthy scalp, helps repair damaged hair and is also great for removing a build-up of chemicals.

TRY IT: Use apple cider vinegar as a nourishing hair rinse by mixing 1 part warm water and 1 part apple cider vinegar together and pour over hair post shampooing. Leave for 20 minutes before rinsing clean.

7. Rice water

Although relatively unheard of in the UK, fermented rice water has been used for years by Yao women, which is what they claim to be the secret to their beautiful, long hair.

The water is rich in antioxidants, minerals, vitamin E and also inositol, which can both protect and prevent hair damage.

TRY IT: Rinse a cup of rice, then place in a bowl and cover with water. Leave to sit for 15 minutes. Pour into an air-tight bottle or jar and leave for a day until it turns sour. Boil the liquid in a pan, then leave to cool. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil, then use as a replacement for shampoo by massaging through your hair. Rinse with cold water.

8. Honey

Honey is used in many beauty products, both shop-bought and homemade. Honey is an emollient, so helps to seal moisture in your hair and prevent it from becoming dry. It also has antibacterial and antiseptic properties, cleans hair follicles, stimulates re-growth and has antioxidants which prevent damage.

TRY IT: To use honey as a home remedy for rapid hair growth, microwave 1/2 cup honey with 1/4 cup olive oil and apply to hair when cool, beginning at the roots and spreading evenly. Leave for 30 minutes under a shower cap, then rinse with cool water and shampoo.

9. Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil has been proven to be effective for moisturising hair. It's included in many hair care products because of this, along with its ability to prevent breakages and strengthen your tresses.

Remember: healthier hair = longer, stronger hair!

TRY IT: Gently warm 1-2tbsp oil in the microwave. Start applying to the scalp before working it through the hair. Leave for 20 minutes before rinsing. Alternatively, you can also add jojoba oil to your existing products to give them an extra boost of goodness.

Hair loss treatments

A proven solution to hair loss may seem too good to be true, but in fact, they do exist. Minoxidil (available over-the-counter) and Finasteride (available on prescription are both FDA approved to counteract hair loss, by reinvigorating shrunken hair follicles.

If you struggle with hair loss or alapecia, they may be worth giving a go.

Thanks for reading and good luck! We'd love to know how you get on - share your experiences with us in the comments below.

I've been trying to get my hair to lengthen and thicken, I've not heard of the gelatin so I'll be trying that, my hairdresser suggested taking silica tablets, I got mine from Holland &Barratt they were half price, when I ordered which was a bonus. I've been taking them a month now, I must say my hair looks to be stronger and in much better condition

I am working as a lawyer and my personal experience, i am bit happy with NuHairRx serum with the final result after six months of usage. If you want to style your hair thicker then try to use NuhairRx serum which is comfort you to get growing and thicker hair naturally.

I always get oily, unkempt looking hair after I use coconut oil. It helps my hair but it's awfully hard to style when you have to be out for most of the day and you still want to look acceptable. Any tips?

    1. Author Anushka F on February 19, 2016 at 12:53 pm

Hi there, I know what you mean. I apply coconut oil at night and then shampoo it out in the morning which does the trick for me. How about halving the amount of oil you are applying? You don't need as much as you think - coconut oil is extremely moisturising even in small doses.

Hey! In somewhere in may I had got a layered hair cut. I liked it but then started not liking it after 3 months so I cut it again into a layers. when the stylist cut my it was horrible. Absolutely horrible. I felt like crying because my hair was ruined. My friends made fun of me because of my hair. After 4 months it grew. And I cut it straight but the hairs on the top of my head were still very short. (About 4 inches difference between my top hair and low hair) It still looks horrible so I had to clip the top hair up. The next month later I again cut my hair straight. This all happened in December and now it's 23ed Feb 2016. My hair still looks weird. I'm desperate for my top hair to grow faster. I have just tried to heat up coconut oil and message my scalp with it. I also tie my hair into two plaits. Could you please give me some tips on how to grow my top hair faster? I want it Atleast 4 inches long but quickly. If you know Lindsey Stirling you'll see that her top hair is very short from her bottom hair. Please reply as soon as.possible.

Hi Erin, so to hear you've had a bit of a hair nightmare. I once cut my hair into a pixie cute and it took a long time to grow it back to the style I originally had. I suggest you follow the advice in this article to help grow your hair quicker. The inversion method worked for me so let me know how you get on with that. You just need to massage your hair daily for 7 days alternating with coconut oil. Good luck!

Until then what I am using is working, my hair is thicker, shinny, and longer, I have gotten comments on my hair, I'm 50 years old, my hair was thinning and brittle. It takes a while longer, but I'm happy. Now my ex-husband can eat his heart out at my daughter's wedding in June, cause he loves long hair and mine is growing below my boobs. Lol

Thank you some great tips can't wait to try them! ???

Hi Anushka, I am going to try the inversion method. Thanks for the tip! I already take biotin every day and it sure does help make my hair thicker and healthier - I will double up for the next week to see if that helps with hair growth. I've been taking it for a year and a half when I started growing my hair out from a pixie cut - it's also great for growing and strengthening your fingernails. I started growing out my hair 18 months ago and now it is to my shoulders which is roughly .75 of an inch per month. I've had a few trims to shape it up - my hair was almost shaved above my ears so it was like starting my hair growth from scratch. I also drink a lot of water and eat plenty of almonds & avocados because I like their health benefits and I eat plenty of other fruits and veggies. A good diet is key to hair growth. I changed my diet from lots of pasta, rice and sugar and the difference in how I feel is amazing. So is my hair since I changed my diet. It was very difficult to break old habits and to stay away from most sugars and sweets, but it was well worth it for my hair growth and for how good I feel. For my main meal each day, I eat a huge bowl of raw veggie salad like cucumbers (my fave), carrots, celery, peppers, lettuce (optional), olives, sunflower seeds, nuts or anything else that suits my fancy at the time, covered in a salad dressing that I make from vinegar and olive oil with spices or sometimes I eat them naked sans dressing. :) I also eat a small portion of meat, beans or eggs for protein and usually a slice of good bread, but the veggie salad is the biggest part of my meal. Delish! Not only has this been very beneficial for my hair, I've trimmed my down waistline without really trying. I have seen a big difference in my hair since changing my diet. It's thicker, shinier and healthier than ever! I also use coconut, olive oil or argan oil in my hair from time to time and I will add the scalp massage with oil to see if this will also work - I'm excited to see if I can grow my hair an inch or more in a week!

Hi there, thank you ever so much for sharing your tips for healthy hair growth. It all sounds very, very good. I'm really interested in hair growth, especially after I too cut my hair into a short pixie cut! Food really is the key to growing healthy hair, almonds and avocados are both delicious and boost your hair growth. You should also try getting some broccoli into your diet if you haven't already. Please do try the scalp massage, it really can work on some people! Thanks again for sharing.

Hi Ruby, I'm afraid I can't guarantee the rapid hair growth as everyone is different but from my personal experience I managed to grow my hair 1 inch in a week when I did all the above tips. Please give it a go and be sure to measure a section of your hair before and after. Good luck!

Hi there, from what I know you only do it for 7 days - once every month. Otherwise your scalp will get used to the massage and it won't work as well.

My experience using coconut oil is really good, I just love it! It's just soo mositurizing and conditioning I apply it twice a week and my hair is perfect and very healthy. But only applying oils wont help if we also eat healthy food that will help us alot more! Like foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, ex: Flaxseed. Foods also rich in Vitamin B6 and B7 are good for hair and vitamin E and C for strong hair!

    1. Author Anushka F on August 25, 2016 at 9:23 am

Hi Thanks for sharing these tips but I just have one question. If you use the inversion method and massage every other day with coconut oil without breaking for four weeks in between treatments until your hair is your desired length will it stop working after awhile or damage your hair? Basically what I'm asking is why do you break for four weeks? Thank you!

    1. Author Anushka F on September 29, 2016 at 10:54 am

Hi Siana, great questions. From what I know and have read, the scalp massage helps increase blood circulation to the hair follicles. The pressure applies warms the skin and open up the blood vessels to increase flow and boost circulation, but the results are diminished if this is done every day. It should be done in short bursts - for example for seven day then break for 3 weeks - if you want to see rapid growth. If you perform scalp massage every day then I don't think this will damage your hair particularly, but it may encourage hairs to fall out depending how vigorously you massage your scalp. I hope this helps!

Hi Deepti, congratulations on your wedding! I'm sorry to hear about your hair loss, in this case I think it's best to follow the doctor's prescribed treatment. I feel like I have unhealthy hair since I haven't really looked after it well. I've tried these methods but due the way it is it doesn't work. I'm wondering if I should cut it into some sort of of bob even though my hair only reaches my shoulders or maybe a centimetre or two above it. Will cutting my hair make it grow longer and healthier or is shaving a better option?

    1. Author Anushka F on September 29, 2016 at 11:14 am

Hi Mal, thanks for getting in touch! Getting regular trims are essential for healthy hair growth, plus if your hair is dry and split ended then it'll only appear shorter even if it is growing. I would get a trim about 1-2 inches to tidy up your ends then use a moisturising oil on your hair every week. Are you using hot tools and how often are you washing your hair?

Hi Emily, thanks for getting in touch. I would definitely do the inversion method using a scalp massager every 4 weeks. I can't think of anything more to add to the list, but I like to take in Biotin rich foods through a smoothie in the morning as it's absorbed by your body at a faster rate. I mix a handful of spinach and kale with half a banana, 1/4 avocado, almonds and brazil nuts. I always make sure I eat a protion of brocolli every other day. Some people recommend pumpkin seed oil for hair growth - I have not tried it myself but many blogger swear by it.

Is there a reason for only five minutes and only 7 days on the inversion method? Is a philosophy of longer massage or more days not as effective? If you can grow 1" in 7 days, why not 2" in 14 days?

    1. Author Anushka F on September 29, 2016 at 11:35 am

Hi Heidi, that's exactly it. The massage provides increased blood flow to the hair follicle which boosts growth, if you did it constantly then it wouldn't be as effective. Massage is brilliant for hair health anyway so it won't hurt to massage your hair daily but if you're after rapid growth then you need a break in between.

Hi there, it's really up to you. When I apply coconut oil and do the inversion method I do wash my hair every day, but if you don't like doing this then you can use the oil only before days you wash your hair. I hope that makes sense!

    1. Author Anushka F on March 9, 2017 at 10:14 am

Not every time no, Anu. You can alternate the days - one day with oil, one day without and so on. Split ends - prevention is better than cure I'm afraid. Once it's split longer than 1 cm you can hide the split with serum but it's best to get regular trims and use a weekly moisturising treatment, avoid heat and so on.

  105. Author Rebecca on December 7, 2016 at 12:58 am

Coconut oil saved my scalp AND my hair! Everybody should try the ingredients and methods this article mentions! I used to have a very itchy scalp and my hair was very dry and brittle, due to the fact that I was on and off the swim team for a good decade, so spending one - two hours in chlorine really showed on my hair, and then of course the Saturday swim meets we had every week, doesn't really help! I went for a good year (at the end of 2015, up to September 2016) dying my hair all kinds of colors every two months, and this did show as well. My hair also grew very slow due to how unhealthy it was. I started doing coconut oil masks (with yoghurt and honey) once a week (on and off for three months) and my hair has grown close to two inches, in three months! My hair feels sososososo much better ever since I started taking care of it and it has shown! My boyfriend's mother used to be a hair stylist and she said a couple weeks ago that my hair looks better than ever, and this is only month three of my hair care journey! I plan on getting a perm done hopefully by September of next year, hoping that these treatments can get my hair is top shape before I kill it off again. But yeah, coconut oil is pretty much my safe haven to all my hair problems! Especially the itchy scalp problem. I was AMAZED that my scalp didn't itch 30 minutes later, the night I put the coconut oil mask in my hair... it hasn't itched since! (Now given, every now and then it does, but it isn't a constant pain anymore!) and head massages actually FEEL GOOD to me now. They used to feel weird to me but now I do it every time I get out of the shower. I don't always do the inversion method, but I do massage my scalp a lot now. I'm surprised I've been so committed to getting my hair in top shape, as it takes a lot for me to be committed to anything lol let alone DEDICATED. People do need to try the inversion method, and even just massaging your scalp when you get done showering... I swear I can feel my scalp warm up after a good minute or two of massaging it. That my friend, is magic lol.

    1. Author Anushka F on December 7, 2016 at 3:53 pm

Hi Rebecca SO pleased that you've benefitted from the tips in the article! I can't recommend both coconut oil and scalp massage enough - they work absolute wonders for your hair health. So happy for you, just a bit of commitment and you really can see an improvement. Thanks for leaving such a lengthy comment, really made my day and I will try the mask with yogurt and honey too. All the best with your hair journey! Anushka

Hi there...sorry to hear that! I like to alternate with the oils. I wash my hair every other day, so when I'm not washing my hair I do the inversion method without any oil and then when I am washing my hair the next morning I will use coconut oil when massaging and leave it overnight. You can adapt the method to suit your needs, for example if you only wash your hair once a week then you can use coconut oil just once, but still do the inversion the rest of the days without oil. I hope that makes sense!

I'm uneducated about hair care and I could really use the help because I miss my long locks, anything I can do to speed up the process a little, I heard hemp oil and argan oil are good oils for your hair but I want to help my hair without going extravagant in price

Hi Kayla, thanks for your comments. It's definitely possible to improve the quality and health of your hair on a limited budget, in my article you'll find a few different ways to boost hair growth and make your hair stronger. Firstly it's important to eat plenty of Biotin-rich foods such as eggs, almonds, pecans, walnuts, milk, salmon and avocado. Scalp massage will help boost the blood flow and promote hair growth, you can read more about this in the article, and finally oils definitely help. I do like argan oil, but I prefer raw coconut oil. The coconut oil is working but it works so slowly on my hair, and it will take about two months to grow it out how I want at the rate it is growing. Please me with tips, hacks, tricks. Anything. Hi Vinita, yes hair specialists do say you shouldn't wash every day but everyone is different. Some days I do wash my hair every day butI try to cut it down to every other day. 1. Author Anushka F on March 9, 2017 at 11:22 am

Hi Laurie, thanks for your questions! Really happy to hear you are going to try the method. There are different ways you can do the inversion method. You can apply the coconut oil to dry, unwashed hair in the evening, leave it on overnight with a cap then wash it out in the morning. If you don't want to wash your hair every day then you can alternate with the inversion method - one day with oil, one day without and so on. You can even do the inversion method without the oil - or just use the oil once a week. It's completely up to you. There is no real difference between extra virgin and virgin coconut oil, as far as I am aware - this seems to be just a marketing ploy by companies, but I could be wrong. Thanks for the comments on the article, I'm really pleased you like it. I have written the article purely based on my own personal experience and my hair loss experience and journey. I can't promise it will work for everyone, but I just wanted to share what did work for me - after years of trial and error! I am impressed with how young people say you look... please feel free to share your secret! I swear by coconut oil and face massage, but those wrinkles around the eyes just keep on comin'!

So I may be the only male in this section but what the heck. My hairstyle is the very bland side parting/quiff which I've had for years now and I just want a change! I get regular haircuts which may be every 2-3 weeks but it seems that if I leave my hair longer than this it just stops growing on the sides especially. Any tips would be appreciated as I am hoping to just grow the sides to get an evenly proportioned haircut!!

    1. Author Anushka F on March 9, 2017 at 11:24 am

Hi Lewis! Thanks for joining the discussion. I have a similar problem in that my hair at the back of my head take longer to grow than the front! I would try the inversion method and concentrate on these areas alone so you'll be boosting the blood flow around the sides. Make sure you measure your hair before and after to see whether it's worked on not. Remember, massage those sides every day for five minutes for seven days.

Hi there, thanks for your message. With the inversion method you can sit on a chair and just tip your head forward and over so your hair falls forward - you can then start massaging your head. If you feel lightheaded or dizzy then stop immediately. You can eat plenty of food that's good for hair growth such as spinach and nuts. To get your hair back to good health I can recommend using coconut oil on your scalp and through the lengths of your hair - you only need a small amount to really inject some moisture into your hair.

Hi. I was wondering if I was using the inversion method, would I HAVE to put oil in my hair? Or anything? Would the results be the same? Thanks for your time in creating this article.

    1. Author Anushka F on March 16, 2017 at 12:45 pm

Hi Cosette, you don't NEED the oil for the inversion method to work, but I find it help strengthen and moisturise the hair.

It is in the front of my head where hair grows slower so i can no longer put my hair up and have to put gel or hairspray in it to keep it from going down everyday which is makeing it grow even slower! What should i do?

Hi Caroline, really sorry to hear what happened with your hair - I bet it was painful! Have you tried a clip-in fringe for the time being? They look realistic and will help hide the spot. You could try some scalp massage when the skin has healed too.

Please help. My hair has always been my pride and joy. I figured since it is pretty damn healthy, it could deal with some bleach damage. And I figured the master stylist who did all the color-corrections would know how much would be too much. I was wrong, and now I want to burst into tears every time I look at my hair or touch it. I just don't know what to do. my hair has also NEVER been shorter than this and it breaks and falls out. What should i do to regrow hair?

    1. Author Anushka F on April 24, 2017 at 2:46 pm

Hi Jennie, really sorry to hear about your experience. It can be terribly upsetting, but I would use a moisturising hair mask every week to get it back to good health. Make sure you eat a good healthy diet (you can find details in the article) and use just lukewarm water to wash your hair. I wouldn't recommend hair massage if your hair is falling out at the moment, when it has had time to recover you can try a gentle scalp massage in the shower when you're shampooing - that would be a good start. I hope this helps, but if you're at all worried please visit your nearest hair salon to seek professional advice.

Hi Julia, sorry to hear that. For the time being I would try not to concentrate on hair growth and more about treating your hair well and getting it back to good health. I would eat plenty of protein-rich foods, treat your hair to a weekly hair mask on the ends and gentle scalp massage. Try not to use any heated tools on your hair, and wash it using lukewarm water - avoid burning hot water - and your hair should be feeling better soon.

My hair is at shoulder length and it has been like that for 2 years and it's the same length. My hair is not that fried but it's pretty damaged. I did the unthinkable and I chopped off the side hairs underneath to let them grow healthy and fresh again. It kinda looks stupid now but will this help me of getting the short hairs long again? 1. Author Anushka F on July 5, 2017 at 11:55 am

Hi Maddie, sorry to hear about your split end woes. I can sympathise because my hair can be very weak and often starts splitting after just one use of the hair straighteners! I would suggest getting a proper trim at your hairdressers to get rid of as many dead ends as possible. Then you can start afresh with your new haircare routine. Follow the tips in the article - eat plenty of protein rich foods, use luke warm water, try the inversion method, use a good oil maybe once a week. This should all help improve the condition of your hair if nothing else.

Hi Em, I can only recommend the Inversion Method which states you should massage for 7 days every 4 weeks. Scalp massage is always beneficial, but for rapid growth I think you should stick to the 7 days and see how it works for you. Cutting out heat and eating a rich protein diet will certainly help.

Hi Anushka.... Firstly, I'd say a big thanks to you, for stating it all out as detailed and simplified as possible. More so, I'll just add that from the hundreds of comments here, I've deduced that you seem to really be so positive about the efficacy of THE INVERSION METHOD, and for something which you've clearly stated that you're overly uncertain of it's outcome for each individual, I'd say, making it your number one go-to recommendation in all your replies seems rather Not-So-Encouraging and less than ideal. Nevertheles,I'm a man, though born in Atlanta,GA, I do have a deep Nigerian heritage,I'm talking both parents deep... So yeah, git the short, black curly hair and all that sstuff... After 4months,t's currently in a semi-afro state, but I wish to make it grow longer, like so much.... So, fingers crossed, I'm really routing on these solutions working for me as wella.... Giving it a shot....taking a full go at it.

Hi Airyeez, thanks for taking the time to write to me and sharing your thoughts on the article and the tips. I recommend the inversion method a lot (even though I can't guarantee it will work for everyone) because it's free, it's easy to do and it worked for me. I think it's fairly easy to try out, and there is no cost involved if you do it without oil, so it is my go-to tip! I firmly believe diet is really important too which is why I ask people to follow the tips in the article - some people may not be able to implement all but diet and scalp massage is really beneficial not just for hair growth but healthy hair and body. Good luck with your hair growth, I really hope you'll notice a difference. Please keep me updated!

My real greatest problem is that i can't wash my hair everyday for 7 days. It would shrink beyond imagination. Is it necessary you wash out the coconut oil and also, do you have any advice on how to wash my hair?

Hi there, if your hair is greasy then I wouldn't recommend using the oil every day - maybe just once a week and you only need the smallest amount. You can do the inversion method without oil - just gently massage your scalp every day for the 7 days. In terms of washing your hair, try to use a small amount of product and use luke warm water to rinse your hair. I hope this helps.

Yes you should do it for seven days only! You can use oil or you can do it without, it's whatever you prefer.

It compulsory to eat egg for hair growth because I am veg. I even notice my friends who love egg and she eat many. I notice her hair is growing very fast. Mind was just opposite to her. Thank you

Hi Katherine, you don't have to use coconut oil no. You can use a good hair conditioner or even a touch of olive oil. It makes it easier to massage your scalp, and also provides a good conditioning treatment at the same time.

    1. Author Anushka F on August 21, 2017 at 4:47 pm

Hi Beth, it really depends on how thick and long your hair is. I use around half a teaspoon and I have mid-length hair to my shoulders. A little goes a long way though so I would just add a few drops/amounts at a time and massage in. You can always add more.

Hello, I just found your blog and was interested in your thoughts. My hair seems grows pretty fast, I've had it short for the past 4 years and the cut usually gets messy after about 8 weeks. This drives me nuts, previously I always had long hair and found it easier to manage. Now I want to grow it out quickly and I've noted your comments on coconut, argon and olive oils but was curious as I've seen no one mention cold pressed castor oil. I've found this fantastic for my eyelashes and started using it for its rejuvenating and growing properties. I would have thought the properties in it that are useful for lashes ie the nutrients and folicle stimulation would work the same with hair. The cold pressed castor oil seems to be valued higher for eyelash growth than the other three oils that are mentioned here for hair. Just wondering, lol, discuss.

    1. Author Anushka F on September 6, 2017 at 10:05 am

Hi Suzanne! Thanks for your comments, I've had a short hair cut and while it was a nice change I did find it incredibly hard to manage! I am a big fan of oils, in general, to be honest, I agree cold pressed castor oil is fantastic for eyelashes and hair but in my personal experience I didn't find that it worked better or less than coconut or olive oil. But, having said that I do know people who swear by it. I would say it's not an exact science so whichever you prefer and works for you. I like to get mini bottles wherever possible and figure out what works for me.

    1. Author Anushka F on August 30, 2017 at 2:33 pm

Hi Meher, hair straightening treatment may help give the illusion that your hair is growing faster as it's growing down straight rather than in a spiral but it won't affect your actual hair growth rate. I would suggest giving the inversion method a try and seeing if it works for you.

The Inversion method. Haha. I did not realize at first how much of an afro it will give you if you massage your scalp for 5 minutes when you have only have 4.5 inches of curly hair. My question is it better to massage it when wet, dry or with oils?

    1. Author Anushka F on September 5, 2017 at 3:42 pm

Haha it's a great volume booster! Hhm personally I like to massage dry hair with a little bit of oil and then leave the oil in overnight. I don't like to massage my hair too much in the shower when it's wet as I find I loose a lot of hair this way.

Hello, I have been struggling with my hair for about 4 months now. Back in May I had decided to go back to my natural hair color from being platinum blonde. My natural is an ashy dark dirty blonde. Unfortunately doing it at home was my first mistake, and I ended up with red hair. I went to my old high school which has a salon with students working in it, which was my second mistake. They got my hair to a more manageable color but cut off around 3-4 inches when I only wanted 1 inch off. I was devastated.. and my hair was very very dry and thin and lifeless everywhere except about 5 inches on the top of my head. Since then I have added a lot more blonde highlights to get closer to my natural color as it wasn't going a weird orange red color from the previous red dye. It has gotten a lot more moisturized and feels much less dry since then, but regardless is still very stringy and lifeless looking and very hard to style and maintain volume. The natural state of my hair has never been very volumous , but when I had bleached it the texture changed and it felt a lot thicker. I desperately want that hair back but cannot bleach my hair in this state.. so the only thing I can really do is grow it all out again till I have my natural 100% hair back to bleach it again , with caution to have minimal damage. I have been taking hairbrush vitamins, a b-complex vitamin, as well as trying to drink more water and eat more of the right foods. I've also recently started doing a castor oil and coconut oil leave in treatment, which has made it feel stronger. Do you have any advice for me? I am just so desperate to feel some weight to my hair.. it feels like air when I move my head back and forth and doesn't even feel like it's there. I also have parts on the top of my head on the right side that got burned off from bleaching back in January this year, they have grown about 6 inches out now but look very odd and stick out unless I straighten them with light heat. I don't straighten any other parts of my hair anymore as I used to every day and that definitely contributed to the damage I face now. I used to have such beautiful long healthy hair and my confidence has mostly diminished because of all this. I am just desperate to feel like myself again. Thank you for taking the time to read :)

      hair vitamins* sorry not hairbrush

    2. Author Anushka F on September 19, 2017 at 11:46 am

Hi Jennifer, thanks for your comment. I know how you feel, your confidence does take such a beating when your hair is not how you would like it to be and it can be very frustrating. It sounds like you're taking all the right steps to getting your hair back to good health. Eating a protein rich diet with plenty of vegetables and doing a moisturising treatment every week will certainly help, but it might be best to stay away from heat tools at the moment - perhaps you could clip your hair back or use a head tie or hairband to keep those rogue hairs in place for the time being. Perhaps you could see a hair stylist and get some advice on how to naturally style your hair at the moment, without the need for hot tools, while you grow it out? I have found this incredibly useful in the past - they will go through a few different hairstyles with you that will be easy to achieve at home. Have you tried the inversion method or at least gently massaging your scalp? I'm a big fan of this, as I find it increases hair growth but is also really good for your scalp. How often are you washing your hair? It will take time to bring your hair back to good health so continue what you are doing, and I hope you will see some improvement in the next few months. Anushka

    1. Author Anushka F on September 25, 2017 at 10:50 am

Hey there, dandruff and an unhealthy scalp could be contributing to your hair problems. I would start with trying to get rid of the dandruff, there are quite a few over-the-counter treatments or you could find a natural remedy (apple cider vinegar perhaps?) to help. It's really important to maintain a healthy scalp so I would recommend doing this, cutting back on how many times you wash your hair as if you wash it more frequently it could make the problem worse. Try a little head massage every few days too, drink plenty of water and a healthy balanced diet with plenty of protein. It may take time, but hopefully, you will start to see an improvement - let me know how you get on!

I shaved my head this time last year and had about 8 inches of growth from that time. Growing fast is totally an issue for me but also once I grow it out the bottom 3 inches or so are dead. And I mean D.E.A.D. frizzy, white nasty dead ends. What the heck causes that and what do I do?

    1. Author Stephanie C on October 24, 2017 at 3:27 pm

Hi Sarah. It sounds like you achieved really great results with your hair growth. The problem is that hair needs regular maintenance, or else the ends will become unhealthy and split. I'd recommend you to get it cut regularly (a small trim every 2 months) from now on. I hope this helps :)

I've heard before that you can use Vitamin E oil in shampoo in your hair to help it detangle and I've also heard that you can use it on a scar or something like that in order to thin the blood a little and make it heal faster so that would definitely help blood flow, so if there's no other underlying medical issues do you think it would be okay to use Vitamin E oil mixed with coconut oil for the inversion method to induce more blood flow to the hair follicles

My hair use to be really long and pretty.. i haven't gotten it cut or anything. It's shorter, it breaks off and everyone thinks I got a hair cut. I did the coconut oil treatment for a month but it didn't work for my hair.I took Biotin tablets and they didn't really work either. I want my hair to be long again but i'm not sure what to do.

    1. Author Stephanie C on November 28, 2017 at 9:21 am

Hi Whitney. I'm so sorry you're having problems with your hair - we can all relate! You say it breaks off, in which case you might actually NEED a haircut. This will keep it healthy and prevent it from splitting. With regards to other solutions, have you tried any hair treatments? LUSH have some great ones, and there are also hundreds online you can make at home? It sounds to me like your hair is not necessarily struggling to grow, but is unhealthy and therefore you are losing length and fullness. I hope these tips help :)

    1. Author Stephanie C on November 28, 2017 at 2:04 pm

Hi Kathy. Coconut oil melts when heated. If you rub it into your hands, it will liquidify in no time at all. I hope this helps. :)

    1. Author Stephanie C on December 4, 2017 at 9:41 am

Hi Mel. The average rate of hair growth is roughly 0.5inches/month so achieving 15 inches in a year and a half is very unlikely. To increase hair growth, be sure to try out tips! I thoroughly recommend coconut oil and the inversion method :)

Hey guys, thanks for the fantastic tips in this article! I didn't know prior to the benefits of coconut oil on hair as I found it very sticky and hard to style my hair. It was my mother who would regularly apply this on weekends I guess it was an indian practice but I'm glad that she did and now I know the benefits. I can grow 1-1.5 inches per month. I'm a vegetarian and work-out regularly so this adds on top of all this. I can safely say this DOES WORK and your eating style plays a key role in this. Thanks for sharing these tips!

Hey! So... it might be a little too early to share my thoughts, because it's been only a few days I read this things above, but somewhere in my unconsciousness I never really wanted to believe these tips work, because for example on youtube - where I spend half my life - there are so many videos about this, and they are so clickbait, and the uploaders basically advertise a lot of products as well if you know what I mean.. But your tutorial seemed legit to me, and I've read it from the first word to the last. So what I did was to buy... let me get them... uhm so here we go: HARKONTROLL BOOST that says it contains keratin, zink, koppar, (copper ???), niacin, pantotensyra, vitamin B6, and BIOTIN, I also bought B Active tablettes, that mentions TONS of vitamins on the container, and I bought some walnuts, pecans, and peanuts as well. Then the inversion method... I already did 4 days, so there is 3 more left, and in the first 2 days I did not actually hang my head down, I was just lying on the bed, and I don't use coconut oil, I just applied some Garnier hair conditioner before the 5 minute massage... but I think the change is already visible. Also my hair is very short now, and during the last week I pushed it back with a beanie, but today when I got out of the shower I pulled my "bangs" down on my forehead, and I think it wasn't that long a week ago. Keep in mind I have 3 days left of the inversion method, but since I decided to grow my hair long again, I will repeat the process in January. If I do so, I will share if I got good results

    1. Author Steph on December 12, 2017 at 12:42 pm

Hi there Xander. I'm glad you had faith to trust out tutorial! We really have had lots of success with it and I hope you do too. The one thing I would mention is that when doing the inversion method, it's extremely important to hang your head low. This forces blood to rush to the head which helps to stimulate the hair follicles and promote growth. Do let us know how you got on - we can't wait to see the results! :)

    1. Author Stephanie C on December 19, 2017 at 10:08 am

Hi Allys. The inversion method is free and easy to do! Sit down with your head between your legs, and massage your scalp for 10 minutes a day. By the end of the week, you should already have noticed a dramatic increase in length. I hope this helps :)

Hi so I just recently donated 10 inches off of my hair to an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients, and my hair is now not even touching my shoulders:( I am also in a wedding the first week of February, and i need my hair to grow FAST for the wedding. But I am afraid these tips are not going to work, or be a waste of time(of which i don't have a lot of). My hair also sucks to get oil out of so what treatment do you recommend?

    1. Author Stephanie C on December 19, 2017 at 10:11 am

Hi Maddie. First off, a big well done to you for donating - how brave and thoughtful of you. Secondly, I think shoulder length hair can be beautiful, so don't worry about looking nice in those wedding pictures. I would recommend the inversion method, 100%. The coconut oil is mainly for hair repair and strength, so if you're struggling for time, I'd opt to increase growth-rate through stimulation of the scalp. Let us know how you get on! :)

    1. Author Stephanie C on December 21, 2017 at 9:36 am

Hi Charity. It sounds like your hair needs some nourishment! All is not lost, though, coconut oil should soon sort you out. I'd recommend using coconut oil a few times a week, regular trims (to keep your hair healthy and from splitting, which will lead to it shortening) and finally the inversion method to stimulate hair growth. I hope this helps :)

On the 20th of December 2017, I was playing with my short, dried hair (which was on average 1 inch) in the front of my head but I accidentally tangled it so bad that I had to cut it off with a pair of stationnary scissors. It is very noticeable when I have a high ponytail but you can't see it when I have a low ponytail when it is split down the middle. Luckily it's quite small (2.5cmx1.5cm) but I'm scared that it might not grow back. Do you think it will grow back and if so, what do you recommend for my hair?

    1. Author Stephanie C on January 2, 2018 at 11:16 am

Hi Ammaarah, The best thing about hair, is that it almost always grows back, so don't fret! You have said your hair is dry, so first and foremost I would recommend a coconut oil treatment to renourish it and get it looking and feeling healthy again. Secondly, I would advise the inversion method to encourage hair growth. Do these things, and within a few months your hair should look better than ever! I hope this helps :)

    1. Author Stephanie C on January 4, 2018 at 9:55 am

Hi Ivyena. You can leave it on overnight under a shower cap if you wish, which will serve as a deeply-moisturising hair mask. However, I wouldn't leave it on during the day. The oil will stain your clothes and can also make your hair look very greasy and unclean. I hope this helps :)

I have recently had my hair bleached for the first time. I was not planning to do it, but it turned out that my hairdresser didn't understand me. Half of my hair was bleached ( at the bottom), and some parts of my hair was bleached at the roots. Yesterday I noticed that the bleached parts were starting to break off, and I am very worried that eventually all of the hair that was bleached at the top will break off before new hair grows. If that would happen it would be terrible, since my hair is already thin and will look completely see-through. Will all the bleached hair break off?

    1. Author Stephanie C on January 4, 2018 at 9:58 am

Hi Maria, There is no telling how your hair will react to the bleach, as everyone's is different. However, it is unlikely that your har will split at the roots - it splits at the end as this is where hair is weakest. I would recommend putting as much nutrition back into it as possible by using a good-quality hair mask or coconut oil treatment. I hope this helps :)

I'm hoping by the end of this month my hair will be back to it's original length. Is it possible for it to all grow back in a month? (I just started the inversion method)

    1. Author Stephanie C on January 8, 2018 at 9:28 am

Hi E.H. The inversion method can dramatically increase the rate of hair growth, however, results vary from person to person. I'd say it will take a few months at least to grow your hair back, but it would take much longer without the inversion method! Good luck :)

Hi Mrunmayee. Your hair's rate of growth depends on many different factors, so giving an accurate estimate would be hard. The hair grows an average of 1/2 inch per month, so if you measure from your shoulders to your waist, you should get a rough idea of how long this will take. It is truly shocking just how many people skipped reading the article and just went straight to the comments to ask what advice there was to help them grow their hair. I have to wonder if they are just that lazy or did they assume the better recommendations were being withheld for some reason (which would be a ridiculous thing to do) and the article just gave generic advice? Did they imagine the writer saved the best advice for themselves but it would then be shared if asked about it in a comment? The article and all the comments took me just over 6 minutes to read so it's no wonder that the school system is being criticized and that there is a definate lag behind other countries when it comes to education. It's crazy. Have a great day!

It is very, very, soft. It's not thick or thin. But ever since I was a child I wanted really, really long hair. But it always stops and gets course once it's a centimeter above my elbow. It just always stops. And I want to grow it long for once. I don't really know much about hair care, am low budget, and don't have much time. I'm vegetarian, and I'm a competitive swimmer, so I have to swim in chlorine 5 days a week. I'm clueless! Please help!

    1. Author Stephanie C on March 5, 2018 at 10:02 am

Hi Meredith. It sounds to me like the chlorine is definitely damaging your hair. Are you using a water-tight cap when swimming? Additionally, are you having it cut regularly? Chlorine will damage your hair, making it more prone to splitting. Regular haircuts will prevent this. I would recommend using a weekly hair treatment, such as coconut oil or a specific hair mask from LUSH to reinject nutrients back into your hair. I hope this helps. Thanks, Steph

    1. Author Stephanie C on February 14, 2018 at 10:10 am

Hi Taylor. This really depends on the length of your hair. You need enough to cover the scalp and the hair from root to tip. I hope this helps :)

Quick Question, how exactly do you apply the coconut oil? Do you just rub it in your hair like its conditioner? Then how long should you leave it before washing out?

    1. Author Stephanie C on February 19, 2018 at 10:25 am

Hi Ethan. You massage the coconut oil into your hair. It should melt in your hands and make this process easier. Leave for 30 minutes under a shower cap, then rinse. I hope this helps. Steph

    1. Author Stephanie C on February 26, 2018 at 12:01 pm

Hi Liv, You'll need to rinse in with shampoo as it can be stubborn to remove. Hot water is fine, but try and finish off your hair washing with cold water, as this adds shine :)

My hair is just below my shoulders, how much coconut oil do I use and is there any certain brand you recommend? Do you get the oil that is in solid or liquid form? I look forward to any useful additional tips you are able to provide.

    1. Author Stephanie C on March 19, 2018 at 10:27 am

Hi Jodie. Glad to hear you're going to try some of our hair-growth tips! I would start with 1 heaped tablespoon of coconut oil and go from there - you want to make sure your hair is fully saturated. Brand-wise, organic, unrefined is best. Coconut oil is only available in solid form - it's solid at room temperature. To liquify it, simply massage in your hands before applying to hair. I hope this helps :)

Having extremely long hair has been my passion since I was 14. I used to think that it was pretty tough. With this article, wikihow articles, and pinterest, I'm able to get my hair to go below the waistline and almost to my hips. I'm getting closer to classic length without realizing it. 6-8 inches to my goal length, baby (15-20 cm)! I eat more than enough almonds almost every day. More than any other nut I've eaten. Nobody in my family has hair as long as mine. The longest my female friends and family can go is down to their armpits. My sister had waist length hair and now it stayed at armpit length since last summer (June 2017). Most people don't start doing treatments to their hair till later in life. It really was a good thing I started paying attention and doing all of the easy steps. Just now as I was doing the inversion method, I apply a really small amount of Argan oil (1 pump to avoid greasiness) and massage it in. It's like a natural serum without the harsh chemicals including alcohol.

    1. Author Stephanie C on March 23, 2018 at 12:42 pm

Hi Alice. WOW! We can't believe how long your hair is - you sound almost like Rapunzel. The inversion method really is amazing, if you're prepared to put the effort in - and it sounds like you are. Great stuff, keep up the good work :)

    1. Author Stephanie C on March 27, 2018 at 5:03 pm

Hi Katie. Firstly, now you've got some length back, it's imperative that you keep your hair in good condition. This means, regular cuts, and nourishing hair treatments (coconut oil, natural masks etc). I'd also recommend brushing your hair regularly, as this stimulates hair follicles, and, furthering this, the inversion method. Good luck in your quest. :)

It is not as curly it is more wavy and I find it really thin. Like my hair is really long i just feel like i do not have that much of it . As in many strands of it. Although people say i have a on of hair. I do not want to end up having to get a wig. What should I do? How can I make my hair thicker? Please help me and answer ASAP I am getting really concerned. It is making me feel very insecure about myself .

    1. Author Stephanie C on April 18, 2018 at 4:07 pm

Hi Gabrielle, Sorry to hear you're insecure about your hair. To find out if you're losing hair, you need to go to the doctors or see a specialist. They will look at your scalp for any evidence of this, including bald patches. Most of the time, hair gets thinner towards the ends as it splits. Regular cuts along with hair masks should help with this. I hope this helps :)

    1. Author Stephanie C on April 24, 2018 at 10:12 am

Hi Vadana, Do you use heat on your hair? (Straighteners etc) Or dye it? These things are likely to lead to damage and split ends, especially if your hair is naturally weak. Another thing you could try is altering your diet. Including more nutrient-rich foods will help with hair growth.

Shampoos and conditioners for oily roots and dry ends. I have changed so many shampoos over the years and nothing seemed to help. Shampoos for oily hair made it even worse. At the moment my hair long but is thin and flat. Could you give any tips on how to manage better my greasy hair . Also should I use the coconut oil when I massage my head. I wash my hair 3 times a week as I have been told that the more often I wash it, the oilier it gets. Pls advise!

    1. Author Joanne A on August 16, 2018 at 5:03 pm

Hi Radi. We've heard that the best way to get rid of oily hair is to go much longer without washing it - up to a month or more! That'll probably be difficult for you if your hair is really oily though. It's hard to start with, but lots of people say that once you get past the first couple of months, the results are amazing and you only have to wash your hair with water! As someone who washes my hair every day (a very bad habit - I know!), I'm not sure I could manage to go that long! I would avoid applying any oils anywhere near your scalp if you are looking to reduce oiliness.

Coconut oil is the BEST product for your hair. I alternated between it and a mayonnaise mask on my hair, and didn't have any split ends after a year of bleaching my hair. Coconut, Grapeseed and Olive oil are my ultimate favorites and can be used on skin and hair. Often times when I put it on my hair, I will rub the excess on my face and neck (Coconut and Grapeseed are great because they're not very thick). I am beginning to experiment with more foods. It's fun and completely natural... You can't beat that!

I prefer applying mayo to the scalp, putting a bag over my hair, and leaving it overnight. It makes your hair fuller, and smoother. I tried coconut oil, but it don’t wash out very good, I had to repeat washing it like 10 times...

    1. Author Stephanie C on July 10, 2018 at 9:43 am

Hi Marie. This sounds really interesting! I imagine it's the egg in mayo that provide benefits to the hair - they're full of protein and vitamins.

Hi Sally, Cooking olive oil is fine! There is Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Olive Oil - both of which are fine :)

Hi. School is starting in September and last year I cut my hair so this year I want to go with longer hair. I heard that braiding your hair also helps have you tried that? Does it work?

    1. Author Stephanie C on July 16, 2018 at 4:51 pm

Hi Faith, Unfortunately, this isn't something we have any experience with! The only reasons I can think of as to why braiding may help is that it will mean you're not using heat/backcombing your hair which can lead to damage and splitting. Additionally, if your braids are tight, they may stimulate the scalp and therefore hair follicles. Let us know how you get on :)

Do you just apply the coconut oil to the scalp or to all your hair?

    1. Author Stephanie C on July 16, 2018 at 4:38 pm

Hi Dee, Initially to the scalp, then work it through the rest of your hair.

Hi there, We recommend coconut oil, but almond oil also contains beneficial nutrients so will also be able to nourish your hair. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your article! I recently had a haircut but 1-the cut is terrible and 2- it's WAY too short, especially for my curly hair. Result : not much I can do about it right now except hiding them in a bun and waiting for them to grow. I found your article really interesting and I'll definitely be trying a few things on your list. I just bought the Lee Stafford treatment for hair growth and I was wondering how you use it with the inversion method? Should I wet my hair first and wash them after the massage? Should I leave the treatment a while in my hair? Thanks! :)

    1. Author Joanne A on July 24, 2018 at 3:58 pm

Hi Jennifer! Sorry to hear about your bad experience with your latest haircut. We're really glad you found the article useful. We'd suggest shampooing your hair first and squeezing out as much of the water as you can so that your hair is damp but not dripping wet. You can then apply the Lee Stafford treatment from root to tip and use the inversion method to massage it into your scalp. You can leave the product on your hair for 5 minutes to let it do it's magic (please don't stay inverted for that long though!) and then rinse off the product and finish your hair washing routine. Let us know how you get on!

Hey I had gotten a pixie cut a few months ago how long do you think it'll take to grow my hair to shoulder length

    1. Author Joanne A on August 15, 2018 at 5:11 pm

Hi Amber! It will depend on a few factors like your hair care routine and how often you get it trimmed. Trimming can help hair grow back quicker so don't shy away from the scissors even if you want more length. It could take as little as 10 months or up to 2 years to get it back to shoulder length. I had a fringe cut a while back and even after a few months of growing it out, I can't quite tuck it behind my ears yet. We suggest trying a bunch of different hair accessories to keep your growing hair out of your face.

I want it to grow down below breast length before school starts. (it starts September 5) o have tried all methods, using correct instructions, but none work. Do you have any other methods? If so, thank You.

Be very careful with vitamins especially vitamin A. More is not always better. I adopted a high Vitamin A diet from eggs, spinach, carrots and kale and had high hair loss. High Vitamin A levels are detrimental to hair.

Hi Yusuf. What is your current hair care routine?

    2. Author Tim on November 1, 2018 at 11:06 pm

If you used Minoxidil 4x a day, Soak it and massage it in for 3min make sure it stays moist while massaging then let air dry. If you did this you will see results within 3 months, You need biotin and other vitamins and minerals as well, wheatgrass is very good. The trick is in the massaging to increase blood flow. I also take finestride for hair its a 6 prong assault on the old hair raid. I had a big baldspot that for 20 yrs got worse and worse. I am 58 and am now seeing hair growing in areas I haven't seen since my twenty's. You can see the pores opening back up and hundreds of sprouts. and growing thick and long layer by layer. I used minoxidil for the past 12 years and it was good for keeping what I had left. But I stepped it up last year with the 4x Minoxidil and the long thorough massage and vitamins and Fin. Actually I had alot coming in before I started the Fin, I just wanted to boost it. If you did this daily you would have to see results

I've read in several other places that air drying is only helpful if your hair dries quickly. Wet hair is more prone to swell and break, so depending on how thick your hair is and how long it retains moisture, you may be better off air/towel drying part of the way, and then using a low heat dryer to speed the process.

I'm a 57 year old lady, Rebecca is my name. In 2010 my husband and I were in a major fire in our apartment. My hair at this time was long and beautiful, to the middle of my back, nearly waist length. Because of the fire my hair was severely singed and scorched. As a result I had to get my hair cut short, shoulder length. Then due to chemical damage during the fire I ended up losing some of my hair. It grew back but I just can't seem to get it to grow like it was before. Some people are so cruel making fun of me for being bald in some spots. It was so upsetting at the time. How can I get my hair back to where it was before?

    1. Author Stephanie C on November 5, 2018 at 9:45 am

Hi Rebecca! I'm really sorry to hear about your experience. That must have been awful for you to go through. Getting your hair back would certainly help you feel more normal again. May I ask which methods you have tried to grow your hair back so far?
