Hairspray is not just for keeping your hair in place! Oh no, this little wonder can is a fantastic multi-tasker around the home too.
Before you continue, don't forget to follow us on:
Thanks!
1. Remove makeup stains
Get rid of those lipstick marks from your clothing by spraying some onto the stain and leaving it to soak in before popping it in the wash. The alcohol will help dissolve the lipstick and loosen the stain, making it easier for the washing machine to wash it out.
Hairspray is also great for removing lipstick stains from carpets. Check out our guide to learn how.
2. Fly repellent
If you've got an annoying housefly buzzing around your home, take action and spray some hairspray in their general direction. It'll stop them in their tracks, making it easier for you to either squish them or put them outside. Whichever option you take, hairspray will make it a lot easier to get the job done.
3. Make your own wrapping paper
Just take some paper, wrap your gift and coat it with hairspray. Leave it to set and it will dry to an incredible shine. This a really handy trick for when you've run out of wrapping paper, but also great fun if you're feeling creative. Make your own wrapping paper using scraps of old paper, magazines and newspaper, and you also save yourself a fortune.
4. Seal in the shine on your shoes
After you've polished and buffed your shoes, give them a quick spray of hairspray. Hold the can about 40cm away to get a light and even distribution. They'll be shining all day long.
5. Prevent and stop ladders in tights
Spray your tights as soon as you see a ladder and it'll stop it in its tracks. You can also help prevent ladders by giving a new pair a generous spray before popping them in the wash. The hairspray works at re-enforcing the materials, making it a lot tougher and less susceptible to laddering.
6. Seal your kid's artwork to prevent smudging
If your little one creates a lovely little masterpiece using crayon, pencil or chalk give the final piece a little spray with hairspray. It will prevent any smudging or smearing and will help preserve it for years to come.
7. Preserve fresh flowers
You can prolong the look of cut flowers with just a can of hairspray. Take them out of the vase, spray each flower and then let them dry upside down. For the full step-by-step guide check out the eHow guide to preserving flowers with hairspray.
8. Zip stiffener
If you have a loose zip then hairspray can toughen it up a little. The spray's ingredients will harden the teeth found in a zip, giving it a tighter grip.
9. Thread a needle like a pro
If you sew you'll know how frustrating it is trying to thread a needle especially when the needle hole is very small or the thread is frayed. Just give it a little spray and it pinch it tightly together. You'll be threading the needle in seconds!
10. Remove lint or pet hair from clothes
If you don't have a lint roller to hand, just spray a cloth or a paper towel and pat it onto your clothes. It will quickly lift off any fuzzies.
11. Stop shoes from slipping
Shoes a wee bit too big? Spray the inside with hairspray and it'll keep your feet from slipping out of them with every step.
12. Tame unruly eyebrows
If your eyebrows need a lot of taming and tweaking, give them a spray with a light-hold hairspray and gently comb through. They'll stay in place and will look more natural than an eyebrow gel.

Not only will hairspray prolong the life of fresh flowers it will also protect them (if you are putting them onto a grave) from rabbits and any other herbivores.
I hadn't thought of that Claire. That's a great idea - thanks for sharing!

True! They aren't fans of the humble hairspray.
Spray on your 3D printer build plate to help the extruded filament to stick.
Interesting tip, thanks Patrick.
Hi, Couldn't you get arrested for assault if sprayed into someone's eyes! Kind regards Allison
Hi Allison, if it was used in self-defence then I think that would be fine. Thanks, Anushka
You can use hairspray to stop feathers moulting e.g. in a feather boa. You can also use it on greetings cards (handmade or shop bought) which have glitter on. It stops the glitter shedding. Spray into the air and waft the feathers or cards through the mist.
Thanks for sharing Allison. I will definitely try the glitter card trick - it's so annoying when the glitter falls everywhere!
Have you tried the hairspray with feathers idea?. I have a new feathered fan that is molting terribly and I don't want it to make a mess at the con.
Oh I've never tried that before Crystal. Can you test it on a small area first? My first thought is that it might make the feathers sticky?
Did this work? I have a feather boa that I am wearing for my daughter's wedding (Halloween) in a couple of weeks. I need to know how to keep it from shedding. Any thoughts?? I don't want to ruin the boa but I don't want to shed feathers all night, either.
Can be sprayed on natural fir Christmas trees to stop the needles from dropping
I will try that one Margaret. Thanks!
Not only good for pen marks on clothing and walls ,it is also good to get printer ink off .
Interesting!
Will spraying my dress lift the color out? Want to spray to keep glitter from falling off.
Hi Michelle! It'll really depend on the type of fabric/dye used. Are you able to test it out on the inside of the dress?

Oh I'm so happy to hear it Monica! Please feel free to send me any tips of your own at anushka@experthometips.com

Will get pen marks out of leather sofa's too.
Thanks Beth!
If you have ball point pen ink on your clothes or leather furniture spray with hairspray then wipe off with damp cloth, and launder your clothes as normal , ever had a pen leak in your pocket? A couple of goes with this method works a treat .
That's interesting Pam. Have noted that down for future reference!
Hairspray is also great for getting hair dye off your hands or face. You can either spray it on directly and wipe off, or spray it onto a piece of tissue and wipe off.
Great tip Lorna, thanks for sharing.
Never again will I allow us to run out of this marvellous stuff! Thanks for all the tips - and from readers too! =)
Thanks for the lovely comment Rosemary. Please feel free to share any tips you have!
Wow, so much use for hairspray! Brilliant ?
I know, who knew!
I bought a very expensive lace dress and was advised by the shop to spray it with hair spray before wearing it . This would prevent it tearing anywhere while putting it on.
That's a very interesting tip Glayne, and did it work?
Don't spray hairspray directly onto eyebrows - it's dangerous!!! Spray on an old (clean) toothbrush and use that - works a treat.
Some excellent tips will be trying a few ??
Thanks Maureen!
Squeaky doors spray the hinges with hairspray, no more squeaky door!
Lovely!
Spray hairspray directly onto ink stains and pop in washing machine. Not need to soak or scrub. Its amazing!
Really? Wow, I must try that one. Thanks Helen :)
I have also been told it will clean silk flowers gets rid of dust?
Yes it can!
Just printed your holiday snaps, or any photo's ? Place prints on a flat tray then spray lightly all over from a distance of about 10 inches, leave to dry for about 15 minutes. Your pictures, your memories, well protected.
Lovely tip, thanks for sharing Dorothy. I'll be sure to use it.
I've been told it's great for removing fake eyelashes. I would assume you'd spray it onto a cloth then wipe...
Oh really? I have not heard of that one before, must tell my eyelash wearing friends! Thanks Ravin.
I find that hairspray stops perspiration on my forehead underneath my fringe which stops it from going frizzy in humid conditions
That's interesting, I'm going to pass this tip onto my friend who has the same problem! Thanks Dawn.
As above comment
ok thank you very much. loved your suggestions.
Fab! Glad you enjoyed the tips Martha :)
It removes permanent marker pen off worktops, walls etc just like magic (not tried it on clothes yet but probably worth a go)
Hi Maureen, Thanks a lot for sharing this tip. Permanent marker can be a real pain to remove so this will definitely come in handy. :)
I have used it to aid the first layer of a 3D print to stick, it works quite well
spraying hairspray onto a leather sofa with pen marks ( Kids hey) spray it on leave it 30 seconds and wipe away,
Hi Angela. We love using hairspray to remove marks too! Thanks for sharing.
I like the fly tip, since Raid seems to be useless now. Personally I use hairspray to freeze massive spiders long enough for me to hoover them.
I use hair spray when I have jewelry that's not real silver or gold. When you spray it with hair spray it will stay nice and it will prevent you from getting green/black marks on your finger, wrist, or neck. Really works well. I also used it to spray the back of my son's watch, he's allergic to things like stainless steel and the hair spray prevents him from getting a rash.
Hi Anita, This is a fascinating tip! We've never heard it before and will definitely be giving it a go. Thanks so much for sharing :)
Stops my steel bicycle handlebars from rusting.
