What is Zoflora?

Ever wondered what Zoflora actually is? Zoflora is a versatile concentrated disinfectant that you can use all over the house. It claims to kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses and eliminate foul odours with a freshening power that will last all day.

How to use Zoflora

Now let's look at the question "what does Zoflora do?". You can use Zoflora for just about every cleaning job on your list. There's a variety of cleaning products you can make using Zoflora, including:

  • Cloth and bucket - add 4 capfuls to 1.5 litres of water in a bucket.
  • Mop and bucket - add 4 capfuls to 1.5 litres of water in a bucket.
  • Spray bottle - add 1.5 capfuls to a spray bottle and top up with water.
  • Undiluted - use 1 capful to clean drains and toilets.

Cleaning vs. disinfecting

zoflora
What makes this cleaning product any different?

There's a pretty big difference between cleaning and disinfecting that you need to know when using Zoflora!

Cleaning products will cut through grease, remove surface grime and leave a clean smell - but they won't kill bacteria.

Zoflora, which is a disinfectant, can't cut through grease but will remove visible dirt and kill 99.9% of bacteria on surfaces and sponges. It'll kill the bacteria that cause odour, removing smells at the source instead of masking them.

For really dirty jobs, start with a cleaning spray to cut through grime. Finish off with a wipe of diluted Zoflora.

Uses for Zoflora

Wondering what you can use Zoflora for? Here are some of our favourite places to use it:

1. Welcome mat

welcome mat
Spritz before guests arrive.

Worried your house might smell?  Give guests a good first impression as they enter your hallway by spritzing a little Zoflora right by the door. Spray diluted solution onto the mat and leave to dry.

TOP TIP: This is a great Zoflora hack! Make a sensory experience in your house by using a different Zoflora scent for cleaning in each room.

2. Smelly shoes

Smelly shoes
Just leave overnight.

Don't let smelly shoes in the hallway stink out the whole house! Add a few drops of Zoflora to a piece of kitchen roll. Place inside smelly shoes and press down. Leave to dry overnight and your shoes will smell great.

TOP TIP: Take the used kitchen paper and sprinkle on a little more Zoflora. Discard inside your bins to freshen them up too!

3. Fridge freezer

Stop the spread of bacteria in your fridge.

To kill bacteria and get rid of those horrific fridge odours, use a diluted solution of Zoflora and wipe down your fridge freezer inside and out. Rinse shelves with clean water before putting food back in the fridge.

4. Countertops

Kitchens are a hotbed for bacteria. Spray a diluted solution of Zoflora onto surfaces and wipe with a cloth. Just don't use it on chopping boards - Zoflora perfumes will taint food.

5. Kitchen bin

kitchen bin
Clean inside and out.

Your bin doesn't have to smell like rubbish. Using a cloth and bucket full of diluted Zoflora, wipe waste and recycling bins inside and out. Don't forget the lid! Keep your bin smelling fresh every day by spraying a diluted solution of Zoflora onto the contents.

6. Cupboard doors

Use a spray bottle filled with diluted Zoflora to wipe down cupboards, inside and out - don't forget the handles!

7. Tap

8. Sink

clean sponges
Sponges are full of bacteria.

Keep your sink ready for food prep by disinfecting it regularly.

TOP TIP: While you're at it, add sponges and cloths to the water to disinfect them too.

9. Coffee table

Let's not forget the living room! Carefully wipe coffee stains off your tables with some diluted Zoflora and a cloth. Don't use on polished wood.

10. Remote control

Disinfect all your gadgets.

Spray a small amount of diluted Zoflora onto a piece of kitchen roll or a cloth. Carefully wipe the remote, taking care to get the gaps between the buttons.

TOP TIP: You can use this same technique to clean phones and keyboards. Just make sure that the cloth isn't dripping wet. Don't use on screens or touchpads.

11. Fake flowers

We love this clever hack. Bring fake flowers to life by spraying them with a diluted solution of Zoflora. The Bouquet scent would work perfectly for this!

13. Nappy bins

Have you got kids? You can even use Zoflora in the nursery! Just like normal bins, nappy bins need cleaning too. Wipe down a nappy bin with diluted Zoflora and a cloth to disinfect it.

14. Mattress

We all know accidents happen. Spray diluted Zoflora onto the mattress and then leave to dry.

It's covered in bacteria!

Damp places are full of bacteria. Spray diluted Zoflora solution and wipe down with a cloth. Remove the showerhead and soak in a bucket of diluted Zoflora.

20. Toilet

toilet cleaning
It's so easy!

Make your bathroom smell amazing with this easy Zoflora cleaning trick.

Pour undiluted Zoflora into the toilet bowl and use the toilet brush to spread it around the bowl.

Is your loo prone to clogging? Make sure you're not flushing hair down the toilet

21. Bathroom sink

Pour a capful of undiluted Zoflora down the plug hole. Spray a diluted solution around the sink and wipe with a cloth. Don't forget the taps!

22. In the cistern

This is one of our favourite ways to use Zoflora. Every now and then, add a capful of Zoflora to the cistern of your toilet - the smell will come through with every flush!

23. Patio

patio
Clean up your patio with Zoflora.

We bet you hadn't thought of this! You can even clean outside with Zoflora. Make up a bucket of diluted Zoflora then pour it over the patio and scrub with a broom. Leave to dry before allowing pets and children on the area or rinse with clean water.

24. Drain

Pour 1 capful of Zoflora down smelly drains. Of course, this will only mask the problem. We always recommend investigating smelly drains properly. Check out our guide on how to get hair out of drains for more advice.

25. Outdoor furniture and play equipment

For carefree outdoor dining and play, wipe down with diluted Zoflora and a cloth.

26. Wheelie bins

Gagging every time you take the bins out? It doesn't have to be that bad!

Make up a bucket of diluted Zoflora and pour into the bin, making sure all the sides get covered. Wipe inside with a long-handled mop, then wipe the outside, lid and handles with a cloth soaked in diluted Zoflora. Pour any remaining liquid down the drain.

27. Garden tools

Wipe down garden tools with diluted Zoflora to remove harmful bacteria.

28. Air vents

car air vents
No need for an air freshener here!

Ever thought of using Zoflora in your vehicles? Clean air vents with diluted Zoflora. Every time air blows through them, so will a gorgeous waft of your favourite Zoflora scent.

29. Car interiors

Does your car stink? Spray diluted Zoflora onto car interiors and wipe with a cloth.

30. Air fresheners

Refresh a disposable air freshener by leaving in a capful of Zoflora overnight.

31. Pet toys

Dog
It's great for getting rid of dog odours!

Pet toys have seen it all! They've been in your pet's mouth, dragged around the house and probably outside too. You should give them a clean every once in a while.

Soak plastic toys in a bucket of diluted Zoflora. Rinse and leave to dry before giving to your pet. Avoid completely soaking toys with small holes that are likely to fill with water as they are difficult to clean and dry fully. For these toys, you should wipe the surface with diluted Zoflora.

32. Carriers, crates, cages, and baskets

It's a good idea to clean their carries and baskets from time to time, especially if they've had an accident inside it. Wipe down with diluted Zoflora and a cloth.

33. Litter tray

Litter trays can get really smelly. Kill odours at the source by disinfecting them. Empty the litter tray, then wipe clean with diluted Zoflora and kitchen roll or a cloth. Leave to dry before letting pets use it.

34. Dog blankets

Dog blankets are the worst culprit for harbouring pet smells. Place in the washing machine and add 2 capfuls of Zoflora to the drum, then wash on a regular cycle.

35. Washing machine

washing machine
You can even use it in the laundry!

Can you use Zoflora in your washing machine? The answer is yes. Clean your washing machine by wiping down the outside with a cloth and diluted Zoflora. Clean the inside of the machine by pouring 2 capfuls into the drum of your machine and running a hot cycle.

TOP TIP: Wipe down the inside of suitcases with a cloth dampened with a diluted solution of Zoflora. Leave to dry and then pack your case as normal. Your clothes will smell amazing when you arrive at your travel destination!

Q&A

Are there limited edition Zoflora fragrances?

Zoflora creates limited edition fragrances all year round - snap them up before they're gone!

Is there an alternative to Zoflora?

Dettol is an alternative to Zoflora but does not come in the same array of fragrances.

Is Zoflora pet safe?

You should always follow instructions on the packaging and allow Zoflora to dry completely before your pets come into contact with surfaces treated with the product. Don't use Zoflora to clean bowls or bottles.

Is Zoflora safe around children?

The bottle doesn't currently have a child-safe cap. Keep out of reach of children.

What does Mrs Hinch do with Zoflora?

One of Mrs Hinch's favourite uses for Zoflora is to put her clothes "to bed". She will put her used cloths into the kitchen sink, adding a capful of Zoflora and filling the sink with hot water. This helps to clean the cloths, and leaves an amazing smell - give it a try!

Is Zoflora flammable?

Undiluted Zoflora is flammable, so don't expose it to open flames or heat.

Should I take precautions when using Zoflora?

Always wear gloves when using and wash hands thoroughly after use.

Is there anything I shouldn't use Zoflora on?

With so many great things to do with Zoflora, there will also be some places you should avoid using it. Always patch test on an inconspicuous area before using Zoflora for the first time. You should never use Zoflora on:

  • Polished wood
  • Painted surfaces
  • Bowls or bottles

Can you mix Zoflora with other cleaners?

You should never mix cleaning chemicals together as it could cause a toxic, harmful reaction.

Can I use Zoflora to wash my clothes?

While some people have tried using Zoflora to wash their clothes, we wouldn't recommend it. If you want to sanitise your washing, stick to a laundry cleanser like Dettol's.

Where can I buy Zoflora?

Zoflora is available in a variety of scents including:

Some scents are limited edition, so the selection changes constantly. You might find that some are rare and hard to find.

Selected scents can be found in Aldi, Asda, B&M, Co-op, Home Bargains, Iceland, Morrisons, Ocado, Poundland, Poundstretcher, Sainsbury's, Savers, Tesco, Wilko and Waitrose. Not all retailers will stock the full range.

Hi Jackie! Unfortunately, all of Zoflora's cleaning products are pretty heavily fragranced, but you could try an alternative disinfectant such as Dettol.

Zoflora reminds me of my grandparents. The smell was overpowering!! I have bought it myself since, but there are so many choices of fragrances. I've never found one I really like, and once the bottle has been opened, it must be finished before I can think about buying another. I would like something light and fresh. Also, how much can you dilute Zoflora until it is no longer effective? Thank you Lynn (Powell)

    1. Author Joanne A on October 3, 2018 at 10:28 am

Hi Lynn. Our favorites are Linen Fresh and Twilight Garden. Have you tried these yet? I'd say the max dilution is about 1 capful for every 400ml of water for it to still be effective.

Hi Tasha. We'd use warm water, but it's completely up to you. We don't know how Zoflora has stayed under the radar for so long either!

    2. Author Shirley Dootson on March 26, 2019 at 6:59 am

I make a solution up ready. I did not know that you should use warm water. Dies this mean that you should make the solution as you go? Maybe that’s why I’m not smelling it as strong as other people.

    3. Author Joanne A on March 26, 2019 at 10:13 am

There's no right or wrong way, Shirley! It's just down to personal preference. You'd be perfectly fine to use a pre-made solution that has gone cold.

    4. Author Shirley Dootson on March 29, 2019 at 8:08 am

Thanks fir your reply. I think I’ve realised why I’m not smelling it very strongly. I only have the small bottles and I put in 1 capful and my trigger spray holds about 300ml of water. Could this be why? Do I need to add more than 1 capful to this amount of water?

    5. Author Joanne A on April 1, 2019 at 11:57 am

Hi Shirley! That could be the reason. On the Zoflora website, they recommend 1.5 capfuls for a standard trigger bottle. I suppose it'll never smell as strongly as it does straight out of the bottle!

    6. Author Shirey Dootson on April 1, 2019 at 2:59 pm

Hi Joanne, Sorry it’s me again. I wash my floors with karcher steam mop. Can I add zoflora in the water tank ?

    7. Author Joanne A on April 1, 2019 at 3:11 pm

That's what I'm here for! Zoflora shouldn't be used in Steam Mops as it can cause them to break and it's also flammable. Hope that helps.

    8. Author Jane on April 23, 2020 at 9:16 am

Could zoflora be used on the cleaning pad? I must admit I’ve been spraying the floor then steam cleaning, but have also taken to adding a couple of drops to the mop pad!

    9. Author Joanne A on May 4, 2020 at 12:49 pm

Hi Jane! If you're using any other cleaning chemical in your steam mop, you should not add it to the mop cleaning pad as the chemicals could mix, leading to a dangerous chemical reaction.

I'm in my 70s and I've always used Zoflora just as my Mum did. I also dilute it in a spray bottle just as in the tips, for round the taps and spraying my shower curtain every day. I would like to know though, - one of the tips is to put it in the fabric conditioner part of the washing machine for bedding and towels, so I assume that's instead of fabric conditioner? Not as well as? Could you tell me please. I usually use the Bouquet one as I like it best but having seen all the variations I've not seen half of them where I shop. Must try and get some others. Yes I use it all around the house. It's a good old fashioned staple.

    1. Author Joanne A on January 2, 2019 at 9:27 am

Hi there, Carol! It's funny to hear that some people have been using it for so long, whilst most of us are still discovering it! Personally, I have used it in the fabric conditioner drawer when washing towels and bedding. You don't need to use fabric softener when you wash towels anyway, and the Zoflora will help to disinfect them.

    2. Author Thea on July 2, 2019 at 5:27 pm

Hi Joanne If you did want to use fabric softener can you use both together, please? Perhaps on other washing (not just bedding and towels)?

    3. Author Joanne A on July 3, 2019 at 9:17 am

Hi Thea! I would not recommend using both together. Mixing chemicals, and cleaning products in general, can be very dangerous.

    1. Author Joanne A on January 3, 2019 at 2:07 pm

Hi Kaylee! Zoflora is flammable so it would be risky using it in a tumble dryer, even if it was diluted and washed out afterward. You could try cleaning the filters on your tumble dryer and using scented dryer sheets to remove some of the smell?

    5. Author Joanne A on January 14, 2019 at 4:35 pm

Personally, I pop a capful of Zoflora into the conditioner drawer of my washing machine when washing my towels so that bacteria will be killed. You could use it for clothes, but you might be best just using fabric softener to achieve a nice smell. There's a bit of a debate about whether or not it's a good idea to put Zoflora into your washing machine as it's flammable when undiluted and also shouldn't be mixed with any other cleaning product.

I have dog so am very aware of doggy smells. I have found an excellent way of getting round this. Using a clean cloth cut into strips, i place a generous amount of drops on the cloth. It is then placed on the top of my radiators. When the rads warm up the smell is divine.

I put some in a spray bottle & diluted it with water as per instructions. Only been in there for about 2 weeks but has turned the bottle & sprayer stick yellow....?! Is this normal as worried if it’s done that what it could do to things I’m spraying it on!

    1. Author Joanne A on April 8, 2019 at 9:03 am

Hi Clare! I've not heard of that happen before. It could be to do with the type of plastic the bottle is made from. I would conduct a patch test every time you use Zoflora on a new surface, but I wouldn't worry too much about it turning your belongings yellow. When you spray it, the liquid evaporates quickly. In the bottle, it is just standing.

Hi there. I'd like to know if there are any particular advantages to using dettol all in one disinfectant spray as compared to Zoflora correctly mixed in a spray bottle, set to finest mist? Moneywise it would appear to be a far cheaper option to use the Zoflora but are there areas Dettol can be used that Zoflora can't? If not I'll stick to Zoflora for all I can but would consider adding the dettol all in one disinfectant spray to my list if it has any specific advantages over Zoflora....other than not having to have a mist bottle and the time to fill it with water and shove the correct measure of Zoflora in for the chores ahead?

    1. Author Joanne A on June 10, 2019 at 12:11 pm

Hi there! The main difference would be the smell. Zoflora can taint surfaces with its powerful scents, so it's not a good idea to use it in areas where food is prepared. Dettol all-in-one is fairly odourless and will not taint surfaces. It's perfect for using on areas like high chair trays, or anywhere that food is prepared. It's pretty expensive to use this all over the home for disinfecting, so Zoflora makes for a great partnership for tackling your whole home.

    2. Author Kathryn Mary Anne Cheeswright on September 3, 2019 at 11:18 am

Am I correct in thinking that Nikki is referring to the marine life in the oceans? Is Zoflora environmentally friendly? All the diluted liquid will most likely end up in the sea after it has been used? Now it has become so popular, is this something that will increase environmental damage?

    3. Author Joanne A on September 3, 2019 at 12:08 pm

Hi Kathryn! I think you'd be best contacting Zoflora directly to get the most accurate answers to these questions. When we look at cleaning products in general, liquids poured down our drains either to a sewer or a septic tank. This water is treated at a sewage treatment plant and then this clean water is put back into rivers and seas.

    1. Author Joanne A on September 11, 2019 at 12:21 pm

Hi Gloria! There's a bit of debate around using it for washing fabrics. I have seen some people say that they've had allergic reactions to the fabrics post-wash. As well as this, using it in your washing machine with other detergents would mean that you are mixing chemicals, which is a big no-no! I think I would avoid using it for this purpose. A good alternative would be Dettol's Landry Cleanser. This is specifically made for your laundry and kills 99.9% of bacteria. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Would it not be dangerous mixing the 2 products - or do you have to wait until the cleaning product has dried before applying the zoflora ? Thank you.

No, Zoflora should not be used to clean natural marble stone tiles as it contains chemicals that can damage the stone's surface. Instead, a pH-neutral stone cleaner should be used to gently clean the surface of the marble tiles without causing any damage.

Using Zoflora on surfaces that come into contact with food, including bowls, is not recommended as it is unsuitable for food-contact surfaces. If you want to disinfect your washing-up bowl, you can use a disinfectant specifically designed for use on food contact surfaces. These products are safe to use on surfaces that come into contact with food and are designed to kill bacteria and other germs effectively. Before using any disinfectant, it's essential to read the label and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. 1. Author Joanne A on January 23, 2023 at 12:26 pm

Zoflora can remove urine smells in carpets, but it's essential to test a small area first to ensure it does not cause any damage. Dilute Zoflora with water at a ratio of 1:40 and use a spray bottle to apply it to the affected area, letting it sit for 10-15 minutes before cleaning with a damp cloth.

    1. Author Joanne A on February 16, 2023 at 5:33 pm

It's generally not recommended to use diluted Zoflora disinfectant on car seats. Zoflora is designed for hard surfaces, such as floors, worktops, and toilets. While it may be effective at killing germs and bacteria on these surfaces, it is not specifically formulated for use on car seats. In addition, it could potentially damage the material or cause discolouration. Instead, you may want to consider using a disinfectant specifically designed for car interiors.

please does zoflora have an expiry date? how long does it stay potent. we ordered some on wholesale to retail but realised there wasn't manufacturing and expiry date on the pack. The container is plastic.

Zoflora disinfectant does not have a specific expiration date, but its potency can deteriorate over time, especially if it is exposed to heat, light, or air. Therefore, using Zoflora within two years of purchase is recommended for the best results. The plastic container can also affect the product's potency, so it's essential to store it in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. If you have concerns about the freshness of your Zoflora, it's best to contact the manufacturer for more information.

I use a cap full of zolfora with the fabric conditioner when I wash my sheets & towels. It give my bedroom & bathroom a fragrance all day while I storage or in use.

Can I use it on house plants to kill knaps

    1. Author Joanne A on January 19, 2023 at 3:29 pm

Using Zoflora on house plants to kill gnats is not recommended as it's not designed for that purpose and could harm the plants. Instead, it's best to use a pesticide specifically intended to target gnats or use a natural remedy such as neem oil or dish soap.

try the Orchard Pear limited edition, it smells just like Jo Malones English Pear and Freesia perfume. Amazing. I had to order direct from Zoflora, delivery was pretty good though.

My husband was trying to be helpful and has used it in the oven is this safe? Turned it on and I could smell cherries 🤦🏻‍♀️

Hi Sammi! That doesn't sound good. Zoflora is highly flammable, so you'll need to rinse it an awful lot to make sure any trace is gone.

I was thinking of adding to 'Melt & Pour, soap base to make 'Soap on a Rope'........the Cucumber/Mint Fragrance, has anyone ever tried it??? Thoughts please :-)

Hi Lynn! I wouldn't add Zoflora to any beauty products. It can cause irritation to the skin.

I've put zolflora into my water/ice cooler tower instead of 40/1 but 80/1 is that okay. It does make our flat smell nice from the fumes outside. Rich and Clare.

Hi Clare! I wouldn't suggest putting Zoflora into any appliance unless Zoflora has specified it in the instructions. It's highly flammable, so it's not worth the risk. It could also void your warranty on the appliance.

Hello, How long can you keep diluted zaflora solution in a spray bottle. I am looking to change to using on this in spray bottles diluted instead of all the other antibacterial sprays and cleaning sprays I use. Will it still be as effective for up to 2 weeks?

    1. Author Joanne A on April 21, 2023 at 12:30 pm

Diluted Zoflora solution should be used within 24 hours, and keeping it in a spray bottle for more than that period is not recommended.
