Heading out for a drink or two this weekend? Make sure you read about this new hangover cure before you touch a drop of alcohol.
Greasy fry-ups, isotonic drinks, lining your stomach with milk beforehand...forget all you thought you knew, because there is a new hangover cure that is said to actually work. And it's cheap and simple.
A team of scientists at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation have recently found that drinking a glass of pear juice - Korean pear juice to be exact - could have a significant effect on the dreaded symptoms of a hangover.
Say goodbye to drink-induced headaches, nausea and dizziness...
They performed an experiment where participants were each given a juice drink to have before consuming a considerable amount of alcohol. Those in the experiment who consumed the pear juice said they suffered from far fewer hangover symptoms the next day.
Professor Manny Noakes, who is leading the study, wanted to test the theory that when you drink pear juice before drinking alcohol, it helps your body to metabolise the alcohol at a much faster rate and also inhibit the absorption rate. Two things that contribute to you feeling absolutely horrendous the next day.
It appears that the factors in Korean pears act on the key enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism, alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase to speed up alcohol metabolism and elimination or inhibition of alcohol absorption,” explains Professor Noakes.
Noakes continues “In particular, reductions were seen in blood acetaldehyde levels, the toxic metabolic thought to be responsible for the hangover symptoms.”
So what does this actually mean?
By drinking a glass of pear juice prior to alcohol, you can help your body get rid of the alcohol quicker which can help your body recover better from the effects of booze.
The study is ongoing, and the CSIRO will continue to test their theory to confirm the prowess of the humble pear. In the mean time, why not give it a go yourself? It's definitely an experiment worth trying.
Buy Korean Pear Juice in a can from Starry Asian Market or give normal pear juice a try from your local supermarket.
