The Baking Hack YOU Need: Get Caster Sugar In A Flash

The Baking Hack YOU Need: Get Caster Sugar In A Flash

Have you unknowingly been paying over the odds for caster sugar throughout your entire life?

The price difference between normal, granulated sugar (around 75p) and caster sugar (£1.60), must mean there's something special about the latter, right?

Would you believe it, caster sugar is just a finer version of granulated sugar.

You're paying double the price for the process of transforming these larger particles of sugar, into much smaller pieces, which dissolve quicker, lending themselves to baking and other sweet treats.

So, how can you save money? Well the thing is, you don't actually need to pay anyone to do this process for you: if you have a blender at home, you can effortlessly grind your own caster or even icing sugar in seconds.

How to make caster sugar

  1. Pour the weighed quantity of granulated sugar into your blender
  2. Blend on high for a few seconds
  3. Check consistency and continue to blend at regular intervals until sugar is ground down - don't blend for any longer than necessary, as this can lead to a 'powdery result' which may affect baking.

Who knew it was that easy to blend your own sugar at home - saving you a trip to the shops and paying more than double the price of your granulated sugar.

Sugar isn't the only thing this blender hack is good for. Here's are just a few other foods you can blend at home to save on their more expensive counterpart:

  1. Nut flours (almond meal, oat flour, hazelnut meal)
  2. Nut butters (peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter)
  3. Flaxmeal

These are ingredients that are often required in many healthy/gluten free recipes which can be extremely costly to buy in their final form. Opting to purchase the nuts, or oats in their natural form and then blend them at home is a great way to save money and make nutritious cheats more affordable.

Hi Julie. Simply blend your granulated sugar for 2 minutes at a time, and this will leave you with finer, 'caster sugar'. :)
