Magic ingredients for fighting wrinkles

1. Cut out inflammatory foods

Those carbs will cost you!

Inflammation causes skin tissue to break down, leading to a loss of collagen and elastin - the magic ingredients for young-looking skin. It also causes redness, flaking, roughness and spots, which certainly won't knock any years off of our appearance.

Inflammatory foods include those high in sugar or saturated fats, such as:

  • Bacon
  • Sweets
  • Refined carbohydrates (pasta, bread, bagels)
  • Soda
  • White sugar
  • Fried foods

2. Eat foods rich in Omega fatty acids to fight wrinkles

Cutting out inflammatory foods is great, but including anti-inflammatory foods in your diet is even better. Omega fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties, which have a radiance-boosting effect on skin. Include foods high in Omega fatty acids into your diet regularly to see an improvement in the appearance of wrinkles.

Salmon is renowned for its high Omega-3 content, but other foods that are high in Omega fatty acids include:

  • Flaxseeds
  • Walnuts
  • Oysters
  • Soybeans
  • Spinach

3. Foods high in antioxidants will reduce the appearance of wrinkles

Don't they look divine!

We've all heard about the benefits of antioxidants for our health - turns out they're great for ageing skin too.

Years of exposure to the environment, including UV rays, damage skin and speed up the ageing process. Antioxidants not only prevent further damage to skin, but also work to soothe and calm stressed skin, helping it to regain firmness. The result? A much smoother, brighter complexion.

If you want to start incorporating more antioxidants into your diet today, try:

  • Goji berries
  • Pecans
  • Artichokes
  • Blueberries
  • Dark chocolate
  • Kidney beans

 4. Fight wrinkles with potassium-rich foods

Add avocado to your smoothie for youthful skin.

Is getting enough potassium the secret to combatting ageing skin? Our skin starts to 'age' when it can no longer renew itself as successfully. This leads to the kind of lines, bags and wrinkles we all want to avoid.

To support your body in its ability to renew skin cells, blood must be slightly alkaline. One of the key ingredients to promote this is potassium. Include enough potassium in your diet and your skin will be much better at renewing old and tired-looking cells.

Eat the following potassium-rich foods for a youthful-looking complexion:

  • Squash
  • Avocados
  • Bananas
  • Mushrooms
  • Dried Apricots

5. Vitamin C can drastically improve the appearance of wrinkles

Delicious!

Sun damage is a big issue when it comes to our skin. UVA and UVB damage are key contributing factors to ageing skin. If you can't bear to part with the rays - and who can really blame you - there is something that can help - vitamin C.

Vitamin C not only helps protect the skin from sun damage, but it also reduces hyperpigmentation caused by it. It actually increases the production of that miracle product, collagen, to fill-out wrinkles and firm up skin.

This amazing vitamin is found in a lot of foods, but foods highest in Vitamin C include:

  • Oranges
  • Red peppers
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Strawberries
  • Cauliflower

6. Foods high in amino acids promote youthful skin

If you're into the nutrition behind beauty, you'll know amino acids are essential for healthy hair and nails. The same is true for skin which relies on amino acids for the repair of cells.

The skin, the biggest organ in our body, relies heavily on amino acids in order to repair effectively and regularly. As we age, and cell division and renewal slows down, amino acids become even more important in preventing wrinkles.

To keep your amino acids stocked up and promote skin cell repair and renewal, eat:

  • Turkey
  • Pork loin
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Dairy
  • Peanuts

7. Phytoceramide-rich foods could be the key to banishing wrinkles

Fried, poached, scrambled - just make sure you eat them!

Phytoceramides have been getting a lot of attention recently and for good reason. They're a pretty powerful substance, capable of penetrating all four layers of skin as well as locking in moisture.

Retaining moisture is extremely important with regards to the appearance of skin. Hydrated skin from the inside out will leave it looking plump and firm, and give you the glowing complexion you're after.

While Phtoceramides are available in supplement form, they can also be found in many foods, including:

  • Eggs
  • Soybeans
  • Spinach
  • Rice
  • Potatoes

 8. Beta carotene will reverse signs of ageing

Get a delicious beta carotene fix!

Often associated with accelerated tanning, beta carotene can also help skin repair from UV damage.

When our skin is exposed to sunlight, oxidisation of cells can occur, which causes sagging and wrinkling to the skin. Beta carotene reduces the speed of skin breakdown, delaying these ageing effects to keep skin looking young.

Slow down the ageing process with foods high in beta carotene, such as:

  • Carrots
  • Cantaloupe melon
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Cos lettuce

Start including some of these foods in your diet today & stop wrinkles in their tracks! Do you have any of your own anti-ageing secrets?

I was in the hospital for 3 weeks with lung and brain cancer. The food was not good but I managed to east poached eggs everyday and they were constantly adding an IV bag of potassium to the mix. My oldest son started remarking that my wrinkles were gone or at the very least disappearing. He is right. My skin is really improving and more youthful in appearance. I believe the potassium might have done this and of course the other foods are just as healthy and important. I just wanted to share this.
