7 easy ways to declutter your bathroom for good!

My bathroom is small. I mean tiny. Sound familiar? It also lacks storage and is prone to clutter, big time! So a few weeks ago, when the clutter started to form once again, I struggled to find what I needed and I began to freak out.

So much so that it inspired me to write this post on how to declutter your bathroom in the hope that we can all put an end to any clutter and make our bathrooms work better for us.

I know, it's so hard to keep everything tidy and organised in a room we use on a daily basis, but if you follow these simple steps, I can almost guarantee you'll be one step closer to a bathroom in tip top shape.

7 easy ways to declutter your bathroom for good!

1. Purge

declutter your bathroom

Take everything out of your cupboards, baskets, bags, anything that occupies a space in your bathroom. I mean EVERYTHING. No excuses. Lay it out somewhere and instantly throw anything away that falls under the following categories:

  • Bottles of shampoo, soap, lotions or gels that have less than one use left
  • Expired makeup - not sure if yours is? Check out this Bobbi Brown chart
  • Any expired medications or even any you no longer need
  • Samples - argh! So many samples, are you ever going to open that sachet? No? Bin!
  • Rusty razors
  • Any hair styling products you haven't used in the past 6 months
  • Any wacky makeup you used that one time for Halloween 5 years ago
  • Kids bath toys that are mouldy
  • Old toothbrushes and makeup brushes

Or you could keep your old toothbrush to use for other items like these weird and wonderful uses for your used toothbrush.

You have to be super strict here. It's good to remind yourself that these are simply products. You have no emotional connection with these items. Don't feel guilty because you're throwing anything out, it no longer has a happy place in your home.

2. Sort & declutter your bathroom

sort and organise to declutter

As you remove all your items from your shelves and cupboards, organise them into little piles e.g. makeup, shampoo, first-aid etc. This will make it easier later on when you start to store your items. Don't bother organising items you're going to throw away, drop them straight in the bin.

3. Clean to declutter your bathroom

4. Make a game plan

Now you've de-cluttered and cleaned your bathroom, it's time to figure out where everything will go. By taking all the items out of the cupboard and sorting into piles, you will have a better understanding of what organisation and storage you will need to improve the space.

5. Divide & conquer to declutter your bathroom

Everyone in the house should take responsibility for their own share of the clutter. If I threw something out that wasn't mine, there would be a war in our home!

So I bought these fab storage boxes from IKEA to make his and hers storage boxes. That way we are each responsible for putting our own items away neatly. We also have a separate shelf each and then a mutual shelf with items we both use.

The labels are super quick and easy to make. If you already sell things online, you can use the same address labels to make these (that's what I did.) Choose your font, print, and stick - problem solved.

6. Store & organise to declutter your bathroom

Every item in the bathroom should have a place and it should be more convenient for you and other members of the house.

If battling through half empty bottles on your shelves makes your precious shower or bath time more stressful, make your shower space neat and tidy by replacing the bulky bottles with pretty refillable pump bottles.

There are also ways to tidy away items you don't necessarily want on display. Choose storage like this Natural Round Seagrass Basket to store your toilet roll.

Instead of having your used towels and additional non-essential items on display, find a nifty spot for them in the house somewhere near your bathroom. That way, you can grab them as and when you need them and tuck them out of sight once you're done.

7. Rinse & repeat

Ta-da! Now that you've discovered how to declutter your bathroom and it's super clean and organised, the best thing to do is to try and keep it that way. How do you do this? Simple:

  • Purge any products you haven't used in the past 6 months
  • Don't place items that don't belong in your bathroom in there, or put them back in their spot
  • Store extra supplies and non-essential items in your nominated space for easy access

Hi . I enjoyed your post but I would suggest that you tip all near finished shampoo and handwash into one bottle and use it for handwashing or general cleaning. And please recycle the empty plastic bottles!

      Thanks Janet, great tips!

I agree with Janet A. I always upend the dregs into the new bottle. It may not seem worthwhile to some, but you paid for it, why should you just chuck it?

I couldn't agree more, Andrea! Waste not, want not :)

Completely agree with Janet A about combining shampoos etc into one bottle and recycling. Do not throw away things that are almost used up (as this article suggests) - that's not de-cluttering; just a stupid waste of money (and ffs think of the planet!). I pack away new items into a box in the wardrobe and insist that the family use up opened items first. If you can afford not to use up items and want to get rid, group them together, take a photo and put on freecycle (or similar freebie site) - there's always someone struggling to make ends meet who's more than happy to take them off your hands.

Hi Kate. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. It's a great idea to empty one item into the other, and something I do myself. I also top soap and things up with a few drops of water in order to get the most out of them!

I rinse out the dregs of shampoo bottles into the bathroom basin with the plug in, I let it soak whilst I wash my hair and then give the basin a quick wipe round with a cloth - the dried up toothpaste etc comes off easily and the last drops of shampoo have served their purpose.

Stephen thanks for sharing this. I got tired of sharing a bathroom drawer with my little boy, so I keep his toothbrush and toothpaste in a basket by the kitchen sink. I brush his teeth there instead of in the bathroom. We also have several hooks, three on the wall and three on the back of the bathroom door, for towels. There are only three of us, but this way, there is plenty of room for more when family comes to visit. I also limit shampoo, body wash, etc. bottles in the shower! Those can add up so fast! Bath toys are another thing I limit. Anything I can’t stack on the corner of the tub goes. One rubber duck and a couple of recycled containers are plenty!
